Fuel Temperature Sensor - SDI

"I'm wondering if it's possible to replace a faulty fuel temperature sensor in the injection pump on an SDI engine. Specifically, I'm asking if it's possible to install a resistor, set to a middle value, in the wiring harness before the injection pump, in place of the defective sensor."
Occasionally, the engine also stalls when starting. My mechanic suspects a faulty reading coil around the ignition key. I would be very grateful for any advice .
