Hi everyone,

Due to the problems I'm having with what seems to be a too-small battery terminal, I just compared the terminals on my car with those on my wife's ALH Ibiza (which has a larger terminal).

Just to reassure you, both exhaust manifolds have the "GARRETT" logo on them, and they look identical in every other way as well.
Even the can attachment seems to be identical, so with a bit of luck, it might be possible to exchange the cans 1:1 - if there were a source for Garrett replacement parts available.
As a replacement part from VAG, it seems that you can only get the complete turbocharger icon_sad.gif icon_sad.gif.

Okay, so my question to everyone: Does anyone know of a German distributor or similar for Garrett turbochargers?
Gruß Ulf

They claim they can repair all kinds of turbochargers using genuine parts, and you might even be able to get the canister there as well.

We are currently in Switzerland. icon_wink.gif

Hi Ulf,
I've found an address. I haven't had a chance to call yet because of some exam stress. icon_confused.gif
The website is accessible at http://www.motair.de. There is also a phone number listed there.
If you call them, please post the result so I don't have to explain our theories about a larger can.

Thank you all.

I also found one that looks quite reputable through Google:

http://www.turbolader.com/index_home.html

I'll reach out to her and let you know what she says.

By the way, I haven't received any response from VW yet regarding my inquiry about exchanging or replacing the battery modules.
Well, what can you expect? It's only been about two weeks.

Hi,

Here's another address from the Westerwald region. At least they make a good, competent impression on the phone. I haven't been there yet, though.

Greetings.

Post17-05-2002, 17:47    Subject: VTG: Drive with Floor Panel, Avoid Can Waiting Quote

Hey everyone.

"Yesterday, I drove my car a few kilometers at full throttle to its maximum speed on the highway. Today, the VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) malfunctioned in none of the 'usual' situations. However, when manually operated, there is still a noticeable tendency to stick in the resting position."
However, I can now confirm that in cases of mild to moderate sticking of the VTG (due to soot buildup, etc.), giving it full throttle for a few kilometers can help. However, this is likely only a temporary solution if you don't repeat it every few days.

Regarding the larger charger core, I found one at Schlütter (www.turbolader.com): They are sending me one that should be able to be mounted on my charger.
It's not exactly cheap, costing around 100 euros, but it's still better than replacing the charger or spending a few days at the workshop for cleaning (so that the "magic" can continue for a few thousand kilometers).
Furthermore, the phone service there is quite helpful and friendly, which is almost a rare find these days.

On the other hand, I was disappointed with Motair: they only ship to companies, and their flexibility in addressing my unusual request was much lower – even though I had already provided a specific part number for the large container from the ALH Ibiza.

Once the larger container is installed, the next report will be available.

Hi,
The situation with the VTG (Variable Turbine Geometry) is becoming increasingly interesting. Ulf describes a 'release' as a result of prolonged full-throttle operation. I cannot confirm this from my own experience; rather, the opposite seems to be true. When I drive my AFN at full throttle for 10 km near the railway tracks, it's almost impossible to accelerate normally afterwards. The VTG gets stuck in the 'maximum pressure build-up' position so severely that you can only accelerate by constantly watching the pressure gauge to avoid entering emergency mode.
Regarding the large vacuum chamber, I am very interested in hearing about people's experiences.

Hi Andy,

Have you ever tried making the VTG (vertical takeoff and landing) system more responsive by repeatedly starting and stopping it?

The simplest method: disconnect the plug from the solenoid valve, connect one terminal to ground, and run a wire from the other terminal towards the positive battery terminal.
Then, with the engine idling, apply voltage to the valve for approximately half a second and then remove it, observing whether the VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharger) rod moves up and down by about 1 centimeter.
Do this at least 100 times.

Or connect the valve with a temporary cable instead of a warning light and turn on the hazard lights (which is slightly more convenient icon_lol.gif).

Or build your own control electronics that can be activated while driving, allowing a stronger exhaust flow to better dislodge and blow away loose soot particles. I may have prevented my VTG from completely seizing up in recent weeks with this approach.

Post21-05-2002, 10:10    Subject: VTG Issues: No End in Sight? Quote

Hi Ulf,
A few weeks ago, I tried the version that uses the hazard lights (I built an adapter cable and drove around with it for a while). With that method, the rod also retracts and extends completely.
After that, a slight improvement was noticeable, but it didn't last long. I probably need to build another electronic dough mixer to do this more often. However, I'm hoping for better results from the large vacuum chamber.

Post21-05-2002, 17:12    Subject: VAG Response: Event Details & Answers Quote

Hi everyone,

Here is the response from VAG, without any comments.

Quote:
Dear Mr. . . .,

We were informed about your email to Volkswagen AG and asked to contact you.

Unfortunately, we cannot provide you with the answer you were hoping for.
Technical issues can only be resolved on-site by your authorized Volkswagen dealer. They will gladly assist you and can discuss any necessary work with you directly.
The scope of supply provided by the supplier is crucial for the VTG loader.
Renovations are not possible.

Best regards,

Customer support.
Service Technology.

VW Audi Sales Center.
Rhein Main GmbH & Co.

By the way:
The large container arrived today (although renovations are not possible icon_question.gif icon_question.gif).
"Unfortunately," the VTG is still running normally since that brief period of full speed on the highway, so I won't be able to tell after changing the filter whether it actually helps.
Nevertheless, I will integrate them soon to test their "compatibility" with the rest of the charger and the control software.

Stay tuned icon_wink.gif.
