Update Control Unit: How To & Benefits

I heard that the friendly Audi dealer can update the software version of the engine control units for some models using the main diagnostic tool.

How can I tell if this is possible for a specific vehicle?
Or can we say that from a certain year of manufacture, it definitely... !?

There are no specific figures available for that, and what vehicle/model year are we talking about?

Okay, in this case, we're talking about a 1999 Audi A4 B5 with the engine code AQD.

The A4 model only started with the 8E generation.
So far, there are only files available for the transmission... I haven't seen any for the engine yet!
