I still think your notebook is too fast. I tried it again yesterday with my old Pentium-90, and it still works. As I said, it only works under DOS or with Windows 98, by starting it and then selecting 'Only Command Prompt.'
I can then display the entire EEPROM content and also save it.
After that, you can change the mileage.
After pressing Enter, I also get an error message (various, possibly related to Zero or something), but the mileage is still changed.
I tried it once on a Polo with an analog speedometer (manufactured in 1998), but nothing happened, and the program crashed. I think it's only suitable for specific VDO speedometers.

Does anyone have more detailed information about how to interface with the OBD2 port (protocols, baud rate, data format, etc.)?
I'm quite good at programming in Visual Basic, and I've also written an application that works through the COM interface.
It might be possible to intercept the data being sent between the alfa8.exe program and the combination instrument, both ways, using a second computer. Then, one could write a custom program that would work with 'modern' PCs and under Windows/XP.

 Hello, I've also been working with alfa8 and have found the same problems as you. Here's my solution:  Alfa8 is a program that consists of many other small tachometer programs, specifically from the Golf4 VDO 66 tachometer and nothing more! I have a small program for each VAG tachometer, for example, VW Lupo motometer or T4 VDO, manufactured in 10/98 (also Audi).
'VDO66.exe' only works for Golf 4 on my system! Someone just renamed it to 'alfa8.exe' and is making money off of it on eBay (that's my opinion). If anyone is interested in taking a look at or trying out my programs, please contact me, and I'll send you the program for your car.
P.S.: If anyone knows the exact requirements for proper functionality (e.g., whether it needs to be a 486 processor or something else), I would be very grateful! Nothing is working for me at the moment.
(I might be wrong about everything, but those two programs seem identical!)

I recently tried to configure a speedometer from a 1997 Seat Ibiza using Vdo.exe and mm.exe! The Vdo program didn't do anything, and with mm.exe, I could hear a ticking sound in the instrument cluster, and the display showed '---P---', which might indicate a problem with the program.
Does anyone know what this means?
However, the mileage reading has not changed!

A decent system starts at 5000 euros, and a complete system easily costs twice that amount.
Regarding the Ibiza: There are various VDO speedometers available (which are identical to those used in older Golf 3 models).
You can only program the EEPROM directly using Torx screws.
For diagnosis: VW uses speedometers from Motometer, VDO, and Bosch.
VDO speedometers can be directly adjusted (but the access codes for the newer models are definitely not included in such cheap copies). For newer Motometer speedometers and all Bosch tachometers, you must...
It takes up to 1.5 hours for the software to search for a password. That software definitely can't do that.
Audi: There are tachometers from VDO, UKNSI, MagnetiMarelli/Jaeger, and Bosch.
VDO goes beyond diagnostics with good software, while UKNSI never does, and Bosch and MagnetiMarelli do so to some extent.
If you're really getting this far into programming with such amateur software, the question remains whether the speedometer and immobilizer will survive!

It's certainly not the case that this piece of software is capable of doing that.
So, just to be clear: save yourselves the trouble, because there's a 99% chance it won't work. There's a reason why working systems cost money, and that includes the service itself. You get good work, and it actually functions!
By the way, no company that develops tachograph software releases anything based on PC technology. These programs (if they are supposed to be good) are only available in the corresponding devices.

Hi everyone,
Okay, so I tried out both programs yesterday. Using the 'mm.exe' program, I successfully programmed a MOTOMETER speedometer to 11,000 km after several attempts, and I also successfully reset the speedometer to its original mileage.
If you want to save a lot of time, do the following:
1. The cable must be properly connected to both the speedometer and the laptop.
Turning on the ignition simply means making contact, it does not start the engine!
3. DO NOT start from within Windows, but use a boot diskette (e.g., WIN98).
4. Start the program and enter the desired mileage, then confirm with the Enter key. Now, the display on the speedometer should show '---P---'. If it doesn't, the cable is not connected correctly, so adjust the connection until '---P---' appears.
5. Pressing the Enter key sends the mileage data, and you will hear a short sound.
The speedometer rattles, the ---P--- display goes out, and the desired mileage appears.
Okay, I tried the vdo.exe program on a VDO speedometer, but unfortunately, it didn't work. I started the program using VDO 11000, but nothing happened; there was no ---P--- display, nothing at all. Then I started mm.exe (just to try, it might work  ), and I did see the ---P--- display  , but then nothing happened.
Does anyone perhaps know what I might be doing wrong?
Does anyone perhaps have the source code for these two programs? I would be very interested in seeing how they work.
So, if someone could maybe help me with that, that would be great.

I can't guarantee that the cables were connected correctly.
In another forum, I was told that the vdo.exe file would not make the speedometer in my Passat 35i (B3, manufactured in 1992) work.
Has anyone successfully programmed such a speedometer?
I also wanted to program the EEPROM. I found some software for that, but I don't want to desolder it. Could it possibly work without desoldering? Could I damage something with it?
