Golf 1.9 TDI, 1996, problem: significant power loss, help!

I'm having a problem with my Golf. Sometimes, while driving normally, the power just cuts out. I mean, suddenly the engine has no power. If I turn the engine off and restart it, it's okay again. This happens to me a few times a week.
What could that be?
