Today, it happened again.
I changed the oil. While draining the oil...
I noticed what seems to be extra weight on the front axle.
It's located practically right behind the oil pan.
Does anyone have any idea what this thing is for?
Greetings,
Thomas.

This thing is called a weight balancer. What is it for? To make your car heavier -- no, seriously: The purpose of the weight is to avoid or reduce unpleasant vibrations in the front axle, which can then lead to fatigue fractures or rough running of the front axle.
You will hardly notice the effects of these weights during normal driving. However, over time, they could damage your front axle.

Thank you for the answer.
Hmm, maybe I should try again.
I remembered Ulf's words about this weight on the gearbox. It was only intended to provide a "more substantial" shifting feel.
Well, I guess I'll probably just drive around the area then.
Whatever.
Greetings,
Thomas.
