I just checked my hydraulic lifters (TDI, 1Z, 174,000 km) following Etzold's instructions (valve clatter during cold start) and found that, in principle, all the lifters can be moved slightly with a wooden wedge under light pressure. According to the literature, the wear limit is 0.1 mm. Do I now need to replace all the lifters, or did I do something wrong ? Thank you in advance .
Hi,
If the engine oil was properly warm and the machine had been run at higher RPMs (greater than 2500) before the test, then the test should have provided accurate results.
It seems that the type of oil used has quite an influence on the function of the hydraulic lifters. Before replacing them, which should ideally be done during the next timing belt change, I would first try a different oil (e.g., 10W xx instead of 5W xx or 0W xx).
Hydraulic lifters are quite affordable when purchased as a complete set from auto parts stores. However, they are ridiculously expensive for VAG vehicles, even though they are made by the same manufacturer. But, a slight rattling noise during cold starts is acceptable as long as the rattling subsides after a few seconds (due to oil pressure!).
Hello,
I used a product in New Zealand that 'fixes' rattling noises. I've also tried it on a TDI engine before. (Sorry for my bad German.)
Japanese imported cars with contaminated hydro stoppers are noticeably quieter than before. Even older hydro stoppers are becoming quieter.
