28-04-2002, 16:58 Subject: Looking for diesel pump adjustment values |

Hi everyone,
I had the engine (AFN) in my Golf III GT Spec TDI replaced a week ago. Unfortunately, now that I'm installing an AT engine, I'm missing the adjustment values for the diesel injection pump.
VW had only responded to me with 'I cannot provide that information to you.'
It would be really great if someone could help me with that, maybe via email or something like that...
Best regards, Seagate.

Hi.
Normally, there's nothing to adjust directly on the pump itself, but rather the adjustment of the start of the delivery or spraying process is achieved by rotating it within its mounting.
The fine-tuning process is described in a link on Rainer's website.
Before the initial start, I would already connect the measuring device or laptop and only tighten the screws enough so that the pump can still be rotated while the motor is running.
Please note that the injection molding machine's pressure adjustment voltage will always remain at the early stop position (0 volts) until the pump has expelled all the air from the housing. It may take about 5 seconds after the engine starts.
Okay, first, adjust the fuel mixture on the carburetor to approximately "2/3 early" and try to see if the engine starts.
If it stalls when you try to start it, or if it shakes violently instead of starting smoothly, set the ignition timing a little later and try again. If it doesn't start, advance the timing a little earlier – until it starts. Then, make the fine adjustments as described in the link. Gruß Ulf

Hi "Seagate",
While not directly related to your question, but likely of general interest to the forum:
What kind of stress or load caused your machine to fail? How many kilometers were on it? Was it boxed or chipped?
Thank you very much, and best regards.
Jan.

Hello!!
For information:
The engine had been chipped, but that wasn't the reason; it was a timing belt failure under load.
In the process, quite a few parts failed (valves, camshaft, pistons, etc.).
If the question about the service interval comes up, I'm already 4000 km over the recommended interval, and then VW says, 'tough luck.'
I learned from that experience and created my own maintenance interval (60,000 km).
I hope that explained it.
Best regards, Seagate.

Hi,
"I also find it quite audacious of VW to talk about 'bad luck' when it's only 4,000 km over the mileage limit." "Because a timing belt doesn't just break overnight; it's a gradual wear and tear process. So, at 90,000 kilometers, it was probably already quite worn and could have ripped under load."
But at some point, there was a series of cars where the mileage was retroactively reduced from 90,000 km to 60,000 km... was that the case with the AFN models?
Best regards,
Jan.

Hello,
For example, this happened with a Golf (model year 1999, engine code AHF) – the mileage was suspiciously reduced from 90,000 km to 60,000 km. This indicates poor quality materials. However, VAG (Volkswagen Group) kept the maintenance interval at 60,000 km, even after the first oil change. Quite odd from VAG!
Best regards, Jürgen.
