Hello!

I would also like to buy some diagnostic hardware.
I'm not sure whether to build it myself or buy a ready-made hardware solution.

Here's my thought on the matter. What are the key differences between pre-built and self-built devices, excluding the enclosure and connectors? I mean the electronics themselves.
The interface from Mth is quite expensive, especially when you compare the cost of the components if you were to build it yourself. Therefore, I almost believe there must be more to it than meets the eye, don't you think?

I once saw a ready-made chip online for interface conversion (RS232 to ISO9141). But unfortunately, it's only available for orders of 5000 units or more....!!!!

And what about the differences between the various providers? There is also a significant price difference here.
My lowest hardware offer is almost €100 cheaper. That's why my question is about the 'why'???

Best regards.

Hello Joop,
I bought the diagnostic connector from DRV back then, along with the original VAG COM software.
Since I was having trouble logging in (to adjust the fuel injection amount), I built the diagnostic connector myself, following Ulf's instructions. The components (excluding the ODB connector) cost only 6 euros! The function is absolutely identical to the expensive connector from DRV!

If I were you, I would build the connector myself and download the software! The demo version is available almost everywhere, and obtaining the full version shouldn't be a problem either!
When assembling, be sure to double-check your circuit multiple times!
Also, in addition, the resistor R3 (in Ulf's circuit) needs to be replaced with a 1.8kOhm resistor!

Best regards, Achim.

It's great that you're participating in improving my draft icon_biggrin.gif.
Unfortunately, this thing seems to be causing problems icon_redface.gif for several colleagues.

What problems did you experience with R3 = 2.7 kΩ?
Did you also try using a 2.2 kOhm resistor?

Hello Ulf,

I'm quite sure the problem lies with resistor R3. After I replaced R3 with a 1.8kOhm resistor, I was able to access all control units except for the engine control unit! Then, I reduced the resistor value again to 1.5kOhm, and now I can access all control units. Bypassing diode D3 did not result in any improvement.
However, my friend is still experiencing other problems that are clearly related to the computer system. He has now reached a point where he can at least access some of the control units. I will definitely inform you about the changes as soon as this circuit is working perfectly!

Best regards, Achim.
