Adjusting the Z-axis, year of manufacture. Dependent?

Hi everyone,

When I recently asked my acquaintance, who works at VW, if he could make some modifications to the central locking system, he wasn't sure if it was even possible.
He believed that this only worked on newer models of VW cars.
I thought my 1998 Passat would be 'new' enough.

Is it possible to add a few things, or not?
