'Recently, the variable turbine geometry (VTG) unit has been sticking on my 1997 Passat with the AFN engine.'
Fixed idle speed, especially after starting a cold engine.

What can I do without making major modifications to the turbocharger?
What exactly does a Volkswagen workshop do in such a case?

Hi.

In the error database, under the section "stuck VTG...", there's quite a bit of information to read.

Usually, the usual things.
Old loader out, new loader in, and a nice invoice to write.

In my (similar) case, they would probably have installed the original charger with the small membrane again, which would have meant I would have experienced the same problem again after another approximately 30,000 kilometers.

And that's despite the fact that the newer TDI models have a larger membrane housing that fits perfectly onto the older turbocharger.
However, it appears that VW is either unable or unwilling to create the corresponding repair instructions.
Well, it's understandable - this way you can still rip off a few more people (even the persistent ones multiple times icon_mrgreen.gif), icon_twisted.gif, or convince them to buy the newer TDI models --> "they have better turbochargers" and all that nonsense icon_twisted.gif icon_twisted.gif.

Or I could go around the corner; a friend of mine has a small auto repair shop there.
He could remove the turbocharger and give it a thorough cleaning.

Hi.

That might work, but of course it will only last until the VTG gets dirty again.
Taking apart and disassembling all those ?? tKm chargers would be too time-consuming for me; I'm already happy with the larger ones.
