Hi,

After having both items right next to each other in the workshop, I took a closer look and compared them.

Kolbenmasse (incl. Bolt:

AFN: 777g
AUY: 789g

Bolt: Approximately 4g lighter when used with the PD system.
Bolt diameter: the same, but different design (tapered material recesses at the ends).

Compression height: equal.
Piston guide (piston liner): approximately 3mm shorter in the PD model.
Mulde: apparently identical.

Connecting rod bearings: identical except for the locating features.
Connecting rod: The PD engine (as is generally known) uses trapezoidal connecting rods, which means that pistons and connecting rods can only be used in pairs.

I find it interesting that the PD piston, despite the cooling channel and shorter guide, is heavier icon_confused.gif.

Yes, I can confirm that to a certain extent.
As further notes:
-The valve pockets are deeper in the AFN engine.
-The piston bowl is offset (in the Y-direction) in the AUY engine.
-The AUY had brass-made hub bushings.

I'll measure it again shortly.

Does the AFN also have a two-valve engine?

The AUY used brass hub bushings.

"Does the AFN engine also have it? I'm not sure about the AAZ engine. The older TD engines (1.6L, 2.0L R5, 2.4L R6) definitely don't have it."

I understand it like this: The pistons from the AFN engine (base Golf 3) do not have bushings, while the pistons from the AHF engine do have these bushings.

The offset refers to the displacement in the Y-direction. For the AUY, this offset is approximately 1mm, while it is not present for the AFN. The X-axis offset is the same for both, at approximately 7mm.

There are many different types of AFN connectors available, some with a socket and some without, and the specific type depends on the year of manufacture.
