Hello,
I recently purchased software for adjusting the speedometer via OBD under the guise of a joke. The program is called alfa8.exe, but it doesn't work (as expected). The program claims to be examining the instrument panel and then closes. However, I can hear the relays clicking from the dashboard, just like with VAGCOM, which, by the way, works perfectly with my interface. What's strange is that after several minutes of running, a printer error message appears. It's as if the program is trying to access the parallel interface, just like some EPROM programmers use for direct instrument panel adjustment.
Does anyone have experience with this?
Best regards,
T M |

Hello Kenny,
Do you know a tool or a trick that allows you to monitor network traffic on Windows/DOS? I have some ideas for Unix...

I also know about alfa8. However, I didn't get it from the platform. When I connect it, it correctly reads the version of the instrument panel, and that's it. Then, if it's needed, it just stands there for hours saying 'please wait...' on the display! Well, either something isn't working properly or my speedometer is too new, or this program is simply a waste of money! |

hmmmm.... Zitat: | | I bought some software for adjusting the speedometer via OBD for fun. The program is called alfa8.exe and, of course, it doesn't work. The program claims to be able to examine the instrument panel and then closes itself. |
I'll ask a stupid question: how did you start the program? on Windows? try it under DOS
then it probably won't close immediately! it should recognize your instrument + ignition lock, then it should prompt: "enter new value" - then you enter something, press enter, it ticks for a while, and then the program crashes! with a loud system speaker!
best regards, mozz
PS: Wenn Sie möchten, können Sie mir Ihre Version schicken, dann können wir vergleichen und sehen, welche Symptome auftreten. Ich vermute, dass auch das verwendete Notebook eine Rolle spielt! |

Hello Mozz,
I also tried it under DOS. I booted from DOS 6.2 and DOS 7.0 on floppy disk. Starting Alfa8 results in the same effect as under Windows, except that the window cannot be closed. Instead, there is a blank screen with a `c:\` prompt.

Hi,
Have you already run a virus scanner through the program before?

You don't even need a virus if you can get people to run a foreign program. Then you can already do whatever you want! So, antivirus software isn't very helpful... |

Hey everyone!
Does anyone here have experience with alpha8 that has been successful?? Or does anyone know of an alternative?? :D
Since I'm still dealing with a speedometer with an incorrect mileage reading, it's probably time for me to find a solution :
Has anyone had success with "removing the battery from the instrument cluster"?

What is the purpose of the battery expansion? The data is stored in an EPROM or EEPROM. You can disconnect the battery for weeks or even years and nothing will happen! |

Hey Joerg!
Okay, that makes sense. But how do I actually solve this problem? The people at Vau Weh told me that they can read the old odometer data from the original instrument and "write" it back into the new one. But how do they do that? So there must be something at Vau Weh that allows you to change the odometer reading via OBD II. I just want to increase the odometer reading to the correct value
Thanks for the information,

Hello Peter,
Why are you so sure that VW can change the odometer via ODB-II? I would guess that they have no interest in doing so; they would rather sell a new car where the mileage can be easily increased...
As far as I know, a mileage correction on used speedometers is only possible in the disassembled state, via the connector on the back of the speedometer... I'll believe it when I see it/try it myself. :O On eBay & Co, a lot of claims are made when the day is long...
Best regards,
