Older engines had a magnet in the oil drain plug, which removed and held iron-containing wear particles from the engine oil. Unfortunately, this is rare, as in my case, due to
motor defect, steel particles can appear in the engine. However, a magnet of this type would be helpful in preventing the particles from circulating within the engine.
The oil pump, although, Rule one: Replace the oil filter, and the oil filter will filter out further particles from the oil. If small steel particles are still filtered out before the oil pump, this cannot be harmful.
You can either purchase a drain screw with a magnet as an accessory or attach a strong magnet to the existing steel drain cover, for example, with super glue.
The benefit of a magnetic oil drain plug is usually quite small, more of a "peace of mind" feature: You rarely have larger metal shavings floating around in the engine, but in case of damage, a magnet in the engine oil is very useful. Due to the extremely low cost of a magnetic oil drain plug, I consider it a worthwhile accessory.
