Hello everyone,
On my A3 (manufactured in 1997, engine code AGR), the air intake snorkel that connects the airbox to the outside world consists of three parts.
Between part (1), which is located in the housing, and the 90-degree bend (2) that runs past the headlight, there is a rubber seal that is glued to part (1)!!! Yes, you read that right, it's glued on! This seal fails for me approximately every 2 years, becoming porous in the process.
The bow (2) is connected to the floor arch (3), which extends to the air inlet at the front, using a latching mechanism. It is a type of spring-loaded snap closure.
I wonder why VAG couldn't achieve the same result at the other connection point.
The problem is this: when the rubber seal becomes brittle.
The two tubes have a very large amount of play if the rubber lip doesn't seal completely all around. This then allows the two parts to have a considerable amount of freedom of movement against each other. Anyone who has ever fiddled with their airbox knows that it is very loosely mounted. With the engine running, the inserted tube (1) is now moved and constantly hits the arch (2). This ensures that even the last bits of sealant are removed and either end up in the airbox or in the engine compartment.
Certainly, it's not that bad if the engine sucks in a little warm air from the engine compartment. And the quiet "clattering concert" of the loose plastic tubes certainly doesn't jeopardize the safe operation of the engine. Actually, I'm just a little annoyed by this cheap construction in this area, which could have been improved a long time ago.
Currently, I have a thick O-ring stretched over the arch (2). However, it can't completely close the large gap. I will continue to look for a better, more permanent solution. I was also considering using silicone or acrylic sealant. However, this connection might be too rigid, as the air chamber experiences quite large amplitudes.
Are there any other A3 owners here whose air intake snorkel looks jagged or rough around this area?
Oh, and one more thing I wanted to mention. While the engine is running, you can clearly feel the suction pulse of the engine with your hand at this spot.
