Seen in Auto Bild: Water cooling for the intercooler on the Mitsubishi Carisma Evo VII.

Does it actually work, or is it just a nice gimmick?
And what criteria contribute to a refreshing water stream?

AND: Would that also be helpful for a TDI?

Thank you very much!

Hi,

Tuneline has a 215 hp TDI engine (which was originally an AJM and received parts from the 150 hp TDI, including the turbocharger and intercooler located in front of the radiator). They also have a water spray system for the intercooler. According to their website, this is the case. The water cooling system will likely lower the temperature by a few degrees, but I wouldn't expect miracles.
Hab´ auch schon gesehen, dass die bei 1/4 Meilerennen den LLK mit einem Feuerlöschen einsprühen. NaOkay.
I'd also be interested to know if it actually makes a difference.

Greetings,
Thomas.

Hi,

My dad drove the EVO VI for a year. According to the description, the additional water injection system is, for example, suitable for dusty mountain roads and is supposed to add about 30 horsepower. I tried it myself one summer on the highway (Kasseler Berge icon_biggrin.gif) and you could definitely feel that there was a bit more power. The Carisma unfortunately only had the short gearing (200 km/h), but the engine power was sufficient for that.
I'll have a look around at home; there was a book somewhere that described it in detail.

Best regards, Daniel.

With a bit of skill (and a modified front bumper), it can be installed on almost any TDI model.
The difference is particularly noticeable during the summer.
The part itself is quite expensive when new, and in addition, the separate water circulation system also needs to be installed.
Happy is he who possesses two skillful hands.

Well,

The installation wouldn't be such a problem. icon_wink.gif

I'm just curious if anyone can provide evidence that the intake air temperature decreases.

The usual methods, such as cutting out the apron, don't actually achieve anything. (See also the article here.)

Hey! Regarding your question about whether it really makes a difference, I suggest the following experiment: In the summer, when it's nice and warm, ride your bike down the mountain shirtless, at around 40 km/h over a relatively long distance. Then, pedal back up, pour a bucket of water over your head, and do it all again... and have someone pour water over your body along the way! You'll see... (P.S. Have someone with a hot water bottle waiting for you at the bottom..., grin).
The conversion is quite simple; for example, it can be linked to a windshield washer system. However, you should then have a tank of clean water, as the standard washing nozzles are sufficient. And I can tell you what it achieves: it shaves off a second on the quarter mile! My friend has a tuned-up G60-16V (gasoline engine) with upgraded camshafts, turbocharger tuning, an additional radiator, an oil cooler, etc. Just implementing this modification alone has gained him another second, which is demonstrably proven.
Best regards, bye Matze.

I, of course, did not attempt that, as I am already familiar with physics to the extent that I know how evaporation creates a cooling sensation. icon_rolleyes.gif

I was just thinking that maybe someone has already built something like this before, and perhaps they could share their experiences (maybe even measurements?).

Beim Viertelmeilenrennen 1 sek. Wow. icon_cool.gif

Then I would have to complete my commute in minus 5 minutes! That's cool, I'll suggest that to my boss. icon_biggrin.gif

Post01-07-2002, 14:11    Subject: Alternative to Liquid Cooling: Best Options Quote

How about this alternative idea:

Just before the air intake (where it draws in fresh air), a small hole is drilled in the pipe. A blunt-cut syringe needle (a thicker one, like those used for blood donations) is inserted into this hole. The tip of the needle should be in the center of the intake pipe and positioned at a 90-degree angle to the pipe wall.
A 5mm plastic tube connects the cannula to a water reservoir filled with distilled water. This reservoir could be located in the trunk, next to or in place of the spare tire (slightly lower than the cannula).

The whole thing could have the following effect:
1. Engine off: nothing happens because the water tank is located lower than the needle.

2. In idle: The vacuum pressure before the turbo is not yet particularly high, so little or no water is being drawn in.

3. At full throttle: the turbo generates a vacuum in front of the compressor and also in the nozzle (similar to a paint sprayer). The water exits the nozzle in a mist and is drawn into the air by the turbo. The heat generated in the turbo due to compression should be significantly lower, and the liquid cooling system has less to cool. I read in another forum that the air temperature at the outlet of the turbo is above the boiling point of water. The evaporative cooling of the water is likely used most effectively here. If you then replace the water with alcohol icon_smile.gif ...

There's a lot to try, let's get started...

Eike.

Hi,

"To my knowledge, this only works with engines that are not equipped with an intercooler, because the water vapor unfortunately condenses in the intercooler and accumulates there."
Therefore, the water would need to be introduced after the LLK (likely referring to a specific piece of equipment or process), which would require more effort due to the pressure present in that area.

Hi,

It would then condense if the dew point is exceeded.

But even if that were the case... at the flow speeds present in the system, the water would be drawn back in as fine droplets and would evaporate again, at the latest, during compression in the cylinder.
Ultimately, the question remains: how much water is needed to achieve a useful effect? Too much of a good thing can also be harmful.

Checking the fuel and refilling water at the gas station is also not the solution icon_smile.gif.

Regards,

Eike.
