Hello everyone,

Okay, I'm having the following problem:

My Golf 3 TDI, manufactured in 1995, doesn't start when it's cold.
I called the Yellow Angels just to be on the safe side, and wouldn't you know it,
The expert sprayed something (red and white) into my...
The air filter was sprayed, and the car started immediately.
He said what was wrong with my glow plug system.

Could someone possibly tell me what might be broken?

Hi,

Probably the glow plugs, although a TDI engine will also start after a while of unhealthy cold idling in the current temperatures.

Okay, so I once removed the glow plugs and connected them to positive and negative terminals.
connected, and they work.
The fuse in the glow plug relay is also fine.

Then, just try connecting a light bulb in parallel with the glow plugs and see if they are being activated correctly.

One possible cause could be a starter motor speed that is too low. This could be due to:
- Battery not performing well (Try jump-starting it with another vehicle that has a running engine).
- Starter motor defective (unlikely).
- Poor electrical connections between the battery and starter motor (check for corroded connections, measure voltage drop between the battery and starter motor, and resolder if necessary).

A third possibility is a faulty coolant temperature sensor, which could suggest excessively high temperatures (though this is unlikely, as a faulty sensor usually indicates negative temperatures).

I personally think it's either option one or two. If it's not, just let me know.

Regards,
Private.

Or, the really brutal version:

Compression, go!

The product from "Gelber Engel" was likely starting fluid (butane, propane), which can (almost) restart any diesel engine.

Before you waste any more money on Oyros, have the compression measured.

I had done everything possible to my old G2 before I finally decided to get a compression test icon_cry.gif, but that would have saved me a lot of money because the engine was completely finished.

m;

PS: Why bother with cold starts and cranking, my EX's SDI started immediately with fresh oil and a -15 degree Celsius night WITHOUT preheating. It didn't even know it had a preheating function. icon_rolleyes.gif
With good compression, it icon_exclaim.gif.

I don't know what the f*ck it was.

Thanks for your answers so far, but I have...
Okay, I've rigged up a cable that I'm going to attach to the light bulbs using...
It is possible to attach cable lugs.

Connect this to the positive terminal of the battery, and you'll see, it starts right away.
Logically, I will disconnect the + after the start icon_wink.gif.

Hmmm, I'm still wondering what's broken.

... or the timing belt gear issue (misadjusted injection timing due to looseness) is likely the culprit again... -> check it.
"Look for that issue; it's not uncommon in 1Z and AAT models."

Best regards, Rainer.

Hi,

If it starts immediately when you use the "glow plug" function, then the problem is likely with the glow plug relay or its control circuit.

Try connecting an LED with a resistor in parallel to the incandescent candles and placing them inside the interior.

It needs to glow when the ignition is on, and then glow again briefly after the engine starts (afterglow). If it doesn't do that, it could be the relay, a cable, or, in the worst case, the control module (MSG). You already ruled out the fuse.

In addition, there might be a problem with the injection timing or compression, because it should actually start without any preheating - it doesn't even preheat for more than 5 degrees anyway.

Best regards,

Jan.

The funny thing is, once the engine is warm, it starts right up.
If it's been sitting for a while, I can connect my cable again.

By the way, I've also noticed something: Relay 109 and the relay to its right, which I believe is either 18 or 13, get extremely hot after the trip!
Is that normal?

Hello,
'So, in my car, the glow plug relay had failed. It wasn't working because the coil winding was damaged. You can also tell by the fact that when you try to preheat the glow plugs (when the temperature is below 7 degrees Celsius), the interior lights don't dim noticeably.'
Try it out.
Regards,
Max.

So, I find it a bit strange because my car always starts without needing to be preheated.

Normally, if he wants to glow, I let him, but he can also do it without.

Therefore, injection start, initial quantity, and compression are still good candidates that should be checked.

Okay, I just went to the mechanic and had them check the error codes.
have it read out.

Result: nothing!

According to the mechanic, the problem is with the crankshaft pulley, as all the engine readings are incorrect.

If it's loose, is it enough to simply tighten it again?

Hi,

Crankshaft pulley?
