Hello,
I have revised and supplemented the somewhat outdated article on chip tuning vs. power box, and I would now appreciate (expert) comments on corrections, further additions, etc.
The previous version is still located at the bottom of the article and will be deleted once the (hoped-for) discussion about the revised version has been successfully concluded. Gruß Ulf

Nowadays, there are plenty of 'tuning chips' (although not of good quality) available for purchase on platforms like eBay & Co. Consequently, some inexperienced individuals might get the idea to open their engine control unit (ECU), solder sockets, and insert chips. I consider the risk of failure in this process to be at least as high as the risk of failure when installing tuning boxes by inexperienced individuals.
Bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
Most of the chips in the MSG are socketed. If you're smart, you keep the original chips and can replace them at any time if needed. And even replacing a socketed IC is something that can be done by non-experts.

Chip tuning is also easily switchable nowadays.
OK, I will incorporate a few sentences.

Quote: | | The previous argument that power boxes could be turned on and off while driving, whereas chip tuning always activated the (more wear-inducing) tuned performance, has also become less relevant: Chip tuning is now also available in switchable versions, and even occasionally with the option to choose between several tuning levels while driving. |
It doesn't make sense to make the software switchable for any purpose other than diagnostics. The performance is in the accelerator pedal. If you don't use the extra power, you're not worse off than with the standard software and the same driver preference – at least with a well-programmed chip.
A well-designed chip shouldn't cause excessive strain on vehicle components when operating under partial load. So, why would I want to simply disable the option for increased power that I can select with the accelerator pedal?

Because, depending on the driver's desired performance characteristics, the tuning range can be reached with only half throttle at, for example, 1500 rpm, but only with almost full throttle at 4000 rpm (values are arbitrarily chosen).
Therefore, in everyday life, it is practically impossible to consistently avoid using the tuning range without becoming an obstruction to traffic.
Therefore, anyone who wants to reliably control the increased wear and tear caused by the increased power output should, in my opinion, opt for a version with a switchable function. Gruß Ulf

I see it that way too.
