hello,

Has anyone had any experience with biodiesel?

What do you think of that rap stuff? icon_eek.gif

Best regards,

Okay, so I (driving a G4 TDI with 90 horsepower) have been using only biodiesel for the past 2 years.
In the winter and in the summer...
and I have never had any problems.
and at 0.70€ per liter, it's a great deal.

Hi.

I'm currently on my second tank of biodiesel.

Since I couldn't go to my usual gas station (Luxembourg, diesel at 67.8 cents), I filled up with biodiesel in Homburg (Saar) last week for 72.9 cents.

I have the feeling that the engine is running quieter (the noise is coming from the outside).

And now my TDI smells just like my colleague's bus, the one driven by Poel icon_smile.gif.

It's better to spend those extra 20 cents; your ESP will thank you for it.

hello, I think it's more likely the other way around. icon_biggrin.gif

So, as I said, it's been 2 years, and my car has 160,000 kilometers (approximately 100,000 miles) on it, and everything looks like it's only been driven 1 kilometer.

Because the diesel fuel is now sulfur-free, its lubricating properties have also decreased.
(the diesel mechanic lubricates the parts inside the fuel injection pump).

and biodiesel is like the oil you use for frying (so that nothing burns icon_wink.gif).
Excellent.

But take a look for yourself, and most importantly, try it out yourself.

@el_diesel

Well, your comparison is quite "stereotypically housewife-like." (Being excellent at frying meatballs doesn't mean you can keep an ESP alive.)

While I'm also trying out BDSM now, it's not as simple as it seems.

I don't believe anything on the biodiesel.de website because I saw that they are publishing INCORRECT approval lists.

Beautiful engine failure, you faithful Polo diesel drivers.

Background: They say that ALL diesel vehicles are approved.

The 1.4-liter turbocharger in the 90s model would be a very early one (because otherwise, only models from 1996 onwards, and here the model year is what matters, are allowed).

Unfortunately, this beautiful advertisement omits two very important things:

1. The viscosity of the juice!
BD is significantly more viscous than Dino Diesel, and therefore the ESP cannot be properly lubricated (even though the lubricating properties are better), because the BD cannot penetrate the very fine crevices of the pump (at least in a cold state) as well. This results in the pump being lubricated much worse. Cold starts are particularly dangerous and more prone to wear with this.

2. The corrosive properties of BD!
BD is an extremely aggressive fluid that can damage various pump components to such an extent that they can become "rusted" and seized. It is particularly dangerous when there is water in the fuel (and there is always some water in fuel).

I know of many ESP (Electronic Stability Program) failures that were very likely caused by BD (Battery Drain).
The damages that occur in 99% of cases result in long-term failures. Therefore, they are not typically recorded in workshop statistics (outside of warranty periods).
Primarily, the alternating operation (BD+Dino) is harmful.

The lubricating properties of diesel fuel have not become worse due to desulfurization (this rumor still persists). This disadvantage could be completely compensated for through the use of appropriate additives. Otherwise, especially CR and PD engines would fail in large numbers.

VW has, incidentally, withdrawn the BD approval for the new PD engines, despite the fact that the relevant standard is now available. ... Why? ... BD is completely unsuitable for high-pressure diesel injection systems!

Hatten wir alles schon mal behandelt! Reading is fundamental!

Generally, starting with the model year 1996, all diesel vehicles are approved.

In the earlier models, the pump could do that, but the weak points are the fuel lines.

They don't tolerate biodiesel and become porous, eventually dissolving.

See also my post on the matter. Facts are being deliberately omitted (as always in advertising). The poorer viscosity of BD was still mentioned in the original version of the page 3-4 years ago. Now, they are completely silent about it.

Well, then I probably don't have a standard fuel pump. icon_smile.gif Instead, it's from a spaceship!

Wrong!!

The pumps did not have Viton seals before MJ96.
Only pumps with Viton seals are "somewhat" resistant to BD (presumably referring to a specific substance or condition).
So, not just the pipes... Be careful with such statements!!

Why?
What kind of pump do you have?
If it's a Lucas model, I would be very careful, as they are quite fragile.
It looks better on a Bosch pump.
However, the vast majority of Polos were also equipped with Bosch pumps.

MOINS,

As I mentioned, I've been using it for 2 years and 160,000 km, and it's been running on biodiesel only, with no problems.

Should this be the exception? Who knows.

Best regards,

@el_diesel

And how do you explain Volkswagen's approval of biodiesel starting in model year 1996, and Bosch's involvement? And why does Volkswagen reject goodwill/warranty claims if you cannot prove that you always used biodiesel that meets the standard? And how do you explain that Volkswagen has withdrawn the biodiesel approval for newer models? And how do you explain that seals on components like the ESP often leak when running on biodiesel? And how do you explain why companies like DC or BMW offer retrofit kits for running on biodiesel at an extra cost?

I could ask you many, many more questions about it. However, I would like to receive somewhat plausible explanations for the questions you ask! icon_cool.gif
