I've been having a problem for some time now where the oil level sensor no longer indicates a low oil level. The first time it showed a malfunction was at around 52,000 km. I checked because the sensor should have indicated a low oil level based on the previous intervals, and I was shocked to find that the level was between the lower mark of the gauge and the end of the dipstick. Since then, the yellow warning light or buzzer has never been activated when the oil level dropped to the minimum. I'm now at around 73,000 km.
The oil consumption is approximately 1 liter per 8,000 km.
Can I test the sensor myself? During the last inspection, there were no error codes related to a faulty sensor. How does the sensor work? (Does it use a float or a pressure sensor - hydrostatic pressure?)
If you factor in this consumption and, for example, a worn valve stem seal or a leaking piston ring, the oil consumption could increase dramatically, which could be fatal if you continue driving until the oil pressure light comes on. |

Hello,
it's not uncommon for this to happen.
I've heard about it from other TDI drivers and have experienced it myself, where the oil level has dropped below the minimum and the light hasn't come on.
Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but as far as I know, the TDI only has one oil pressure sensor. And as long as the pump is still getting some oil, it won't trigger, as there is still enough pressure.
Once it does trigger, there is usually no oil (pressure) left, and you can quickly cause significant damage.

Hello,
The oil pressure warning comes from the 'oil pressure switch', which is actually present in every engine.
The message to refill the oil comes from an electronic sensor that actually determines the 'oil level'!
These are two different things!
Otherwise, the oil level sensor is also deactivated during fixed maintenance intervals!!
Best regards,
Günther |

Hi,
As for my Octavia, I wanted to know if and when the oil level warning light appears. I started losing my patience when the oil level dropped by around 0.3 - 0.4 liters per minute, and I ended up topping it up. In December 2004, I finally received an oil level warning: a yellow light with an oil can symbol and the usual annoying beep. When I checked the oil level, it was about 0.2 liters below the minimum. I could live with that, but as my experience shows, you shouldn't rely on it. So, it's better to check regularly.
Best regards,
