Hello.
I've had a Passat TDI with 66 kW, manufactured in December 1995, with a manual transmission, for the past two weeks.
It drives great icon_biggrin.gif, but there are problems with the reverse gear... icon_cry.gif
I'd like to know if this is a known issue, and what can be done to fix it.
At the VW dealership, the gear shifting was readjusted for €25, but the problem reappears intermittently. VW says the issue is 'in the transmission,' and a new automatic transmission costs around €1200.

Error description:
Yesterday, I put the car in reverse, but it started moving forward!!!
After three more attempts, I could only push the gear lever down, but I couldn't move it into reverse.
Then I drove forward a bit, and the 'R' gear went in normally again.

The gears can be shifted normally and quietly, including reverse (when it's willing to engage...).

'For the past two days, I haven't been able to get into reverse gear, even though I've been shifting into the other gears beforehand.'

Thank you for the tips and suggestions.
hello

Okay:
Since Monday, I haven't been able to get into the R gang.
If I put the lever in the 'R' position, I'm in first gear.
I have an appointment this afternoon with a transmission specialist in Bielefeld, let's see what he says. I'll keep you updated.

Hi,
To me, it still sounds like there's an issue with the shifting mechanism. If you have a cable-operated system, check all the guide bushings. Otherwise, I would first try manually shifting the gears in the engine compartment. If everything works flawlessly multiple times, then, in my opinion, the problem must be due to a misadjusted linkage or worn parts. Let's see what the 'transmission specialist' says.

hello
I believe it's a cable-operated shifting system (EZ 12/95).
But it's probably true, let's hear the expert opinion first.
Hi, thanks for your comment, Micha.

I experienced something similar. Apparently, the people who modify VW vehicles also adjusted the settings. Sometimes it worked, sometimes it didn't!
I eventually got fed up and took matters into my own hands, adjusting the drive side myself. It was annoying and time-consuming, but ultimately it worked, and it still works today! icon_biggrin.gif

Okay, we once messed with the gear linkage on a Golf, specifically the mechanism under that rubber thing in the center console. It was a lot of fun, we spent the whole day working on it. Finding the correct adjustment is so difficult... I wouldn't want to do that again.

But I've heard that there are templates available that can be used to adjust these settings. However, I'm not sure exactly how it works, and I don't know if it's possible to do this on newer cars like the Golf II.
