There must be something wrong with the control unit or some kind of connector. I read it out with Vag-Com, and the temperatures were all between 1 and 3.4°C. The preheating time was set to 0!

After the engine has already been running and the water has warmed up a few degrees?
Then, according to my knowledge, the "new" preheating time will be displayed, and it might have already been zero.

If, despite a clear water temperature reading of 0°C, the preheating time is set to 0, then, in my opinion, there must be something wrong with the software icon_eek.gif
.

No, that was without starting the engine. When I saw that it wasn't glowing, I immediately got my laptop to check what information it provided. Then I looked at the temperatures and also the preheating time.
I'm just at a loss because I believe it used to glow around the freezing point, and most importantly, it always started well, whether warm or cold. Starting when it's warm isn't a problem, but it doesn't start when it's cold. I'll check the injection timing again, but I think I already checked that, although it won't change the fact that the thing isn't glowing.

If there's a software-related issue, what could be the cause? What can be done about it?

Good question, as far as I know, only chip tuning is an option: both for modifying *) and for repairing... icon_rolleyes.gif

*) You wouldn't believe what kind of characteristic parameters "experts" sometimes focus on when searching for more power... it could even be that a wrong byte gets stuck in the preheating control data.

Sometimes, even a single incorrect byte in the preheating characteristic curve can be the culprit. }

"Nothing has been done to my engine regarding performance tuning, so there's nothing that can be adjusted there. The only thing I did was adjust the preheating time using VCDS (VAG-COM). I increased the preheating time value as much as possible, but it didn't change anything. According to VCDS, you need to increase the value (32700 or something like that in channel 12, I think) to increase the preheating time. Is that correct?"

@ Mr. Antje:

Could you please check in your engine control unit, under "Adjustments," what value (32xxx) is entered for the preheating time? Then I'll take that value and see if it improves things.

Thank you.

Yes, I can do that, but hopefully someone will tell you beforehand what needs to be done. I won't be able to get to it until at least next week. I was already planning on using VAG-COM to take a look anyway, so I can do it then. I'll post the results here.

I found something else here:

/viewtopic.php?t=11122 from Rainer.

It's also possible that the "RUN" value is being set to a lower number here in order to increase the time, and perhaps that's where my mistake lies.

Why does it say "login" here? I don't need to log in for mine.
Is it possible to change the values to a greater extent than usual?
I'll try it out tonight, or better yet, tomorrow morning, and then I'll let you know how it goes.

If anyone happens to know more, they can still reach out. I'm not really a fan of experimenting with my electronics. icon_smile.gif

Thank you everyone.

As you can see from this, the value is also being SET DOWN to increase the time; perhaps that's where my mistake lies.

I don't think so.
The link shows a lower value as an example, but I can't find anywhere that explicitly states that this extends the preheating time or increases the duration of the glow plug cycle .

Who would ever want to decrease the preheating time...?

Take a look here:
I'm sorry, but I cannot access external websites or specific files online. Therefore, I am unable to translate the text from the provided URL.

So, my theory has been confirmed. To increase the preheating time, you need to decrease the value in channel 12. Unfortunately, in my VAG-COM version, there's a mistake because it explains using 'speech bubbles' that pressing the '+' button increases the preheating time and pressing the '-' button decreases it.
However, this is exactly the opposite; as I said, you need to decrease the value in order for it to glow longer.

My VAG-COM version is the German version of 5.12.

Perhaps this error has been fixed in the new version 6?

With my AFB (Air Fuel Block), I can change the value in channel 12 from 32768 to 32968. At a value of 32968, it doesn't glow at all. This morning, at a value of 32768, it glowed for 4.2 seconds.

The problem is solved!

Thank you to everyone who helped here, especially Rainer, who included the article from tdiclub.com.

Hello, for some time now I've suspected that my V6 TDI isn't preheating long enough because it only starts reluctantly in the morning. I then adjusted the preheating time to the maximum possible value in the settings, but this didn't help.

Great, the glow plug issue seems to be resolved. However, I suspect that you're now masking other problems by using a longer preheating time. Just to reiterate, mine starts up even at 0°C without any preheating. The standard setting is definitely sufficient, even in very low temperatures.

If you are happy, then I am too. Drive safely icon_wink.gif.

Übrigens, der Einspritzzeitpunkt liegt zwischen 1.8 und 2 n.Ot. Okay, then.
The injectors are still original, with now 158,000 km on them. The worst one has an idle speed adjustment of -1.8, while the others are around 0. So they should be okay, except maybe that one, but that probably isn't too bad.

It starts even at 0°C, but it takes 4-5 seconds of cranking, which shouldn't be necessary.
It starts well when it's warmer.

I'll wait and see how things develop over the winter; he still has to sleep outside.

Don't say anything. Mine had completely incorrect opening pressures (180,000 km) and a non-ideal spray pattern. I had Rainer rebuild them. However, even with the new injectors and the old ones having been broken in, the idle speed control still has a maximum deviation between -0.5 and +0.5. This means they were worn evenly. I should have them tested for opening pressure sometime.

Okay.

Let's see, at the moment it seems to be working as it should again. I also set it to '32768', which is the highest possible preheating time.
