Vau Weh told me that they can read the old tachometer data from the original instrument and 'write' it back into the new one icon_eek.gif. But how do they do that?

Please read the numerous posts again icon_wink.gif.

Anyone can read it.

The mileage can be transferred to a new combination instrument without any problems, as long as the mileage is below 100 km. Once that magic number of 100 is exceeded, nothing will work.
That's why new cars usually have a maximum of 10 kilometers on the odometer when you buy them.

CU Gremlin.

Hey Gremlin!

I'm all too familiar with these posts. The issue with the adjustable range being limited to under 100 km is something I know all too well.

I explained to the VW technician exactly what was involved. He even activated the MFA (reprogrammed the instrument cluster) in my presence, and he was pleasantly surprised that it worked. He knew the mileage of this speedometer and the old one, meaning he told me this "reading and rewriting" story after he knew all the facts. My VW contact also said, and this is very important, that I should bring both instrument clusters to him, because the old one needs to be reinstalled to read the data, and then the new instrument cluster can be reinstalled and the data can be rewritten. He knew, however, that the speedometer had over 100 km. It's clear that you can read the settings for the service interval and the instrument cluster coding via OBD II with VAG COM icon_lol.gif. Slowly but surely, I suspect that this guy doesn't actually know anything about the 100 km icon_evil.gif.
I'm going to call the guy and ask him if it sounds familiar to him. Maybe he's really the type who is icon_mad.gif.

I will report.

Peter.

Does the program alfa8 work for anyone?

When I start it, the display shows 'reading combination instrument' (or something similar).
Then, the program will end.

Hello,

The Alfa8 software is working for me, and I was able to successfully change the mileage on my A4 1.9L TDI, manufactured in September 1997.

I initially tried it with a PIII 800 notebook, but I always got a runtime error.

Eventually, I managed to do it using an old 486 laptop running DOS.

Regards,
Jackson.

Hi Jackson,
How many kilometers were showing on the odometer when you corrected the mileage?

UHU or ÜHU?
(Under or Over 100,000 km)

The program should only work via the parallel interface (as indicated in the wiring diagram). This means that the three cables will need to be connected to the three soldering points on the back of the speedometer, or however it's configured.

It failed for me because I couldn't hold all three cables in place at the same time while also operating the laptop. I haven't found an elegant solution yet to reach those three (very deeply recessed) solder points.

It seems there's confusion about several different programs! Alpha8 should work via OBD2, but only the "old" VDO and Motometer tachometers are connected to the back of the instrument cluster. The software for these is called vdo.exe and mm.exe, and they function (though only to a limited extent).

Sure, here's the translation:

"gruzz mozz"

Yes, mozz, you are right. I apologize for my 'unqualified' interference icon_redface.gif. I have also only tried vdo.exe and mm.exe.

Hello,

My mileage was over HT kilometers, and the software definitely uses the serial interface with an OBD interface.

No way am I going to stick something anywhere on the dashboard... icon_wink.gif

Jackson.

'What does 'conditionally' mean?'

Hello Jackson!

So far, you're the first person I know who has managed to get alfa8 working on an Audi. Maybe it really only works with very old laptops, but otherwise, the program is rather buggy, sorry.

Best regards, Peter.

I don't think it's solely dependent on the notebook. In my opinion, the manufacturing year of the tachometer is more relevant. I believe the software does work, but not with modern tachometers! My Asbach notebook (a 486 model with 4MB of RAM) couldn't even 'read' the tachometer from my Passat, which was manufactured in 2001!

Hello everyone,

I also have an A4 TDI from the year 1997. So, alfa8 should actually work for me. However, it doesn't. I'm not getting a runtime error, but rather a printer error message (see the original post). I suspect that the issue might be related to the OBD interface. My laptop is a Dell with a 600MHz processor.

Jackson: What interface are you using?

Regards,
TM

Just be careful with MM and VDO! By "conditional," I mean that you might only see "----" on the display, or you might get error messages.
I know some people who initially damaged their combination devices and then reprogrammed the EEPROM directly using a clip to get them working again.

Sure, here's the translation:

"gruzz" is a German slang term that can be translated as "greetings" or "regards." It is often used in informal settings, such as text messages or social media posts.
