I read in the newspaper today that Volkswagen is phasing out its Pumpe Düse (PD) engines. The last PD models are expected to appear soon, and they will be discontinued by 2012. In future models, only Common Rail systems will be used. Reason: The CR models now meet the desired emission standards.
Source? I doubt they'll let http://www.vw-mechatronic.com/ disappear anytime soon, or are they planning to produce parts for trucks now? And whether the processing costs for this project actually reach the 100 EUR mentioned here: http://www.capital.de/polunt/art/267323.html (although: those costs are shared between VW and Siemens VDO...).
Let's see, it's still quite a ways off until 2008/2012...

that the PD engine is supposed to be discontinued is not entirely new; the information is that it is simply not the best in its current configuration due to the very speed-dependent fuel injection pressure.
I'd rather believe my contacts in Bosch's development department, who say that piezo injectors are more likely to be released to the market than VAG going back to common rail technology.
Speculating freely.

P.S.: I mean piezoelectric injectors, not piezo nozzles for CR injectors...
