Hi everyone, I recently bought a Passat! At first, I was very happy with its performance, but I think it could be better. I have a 2000 PD TDI with just under 90,000 km. Could a chip for the engine or turbo be harmful? What would you recommend? I saw something on eBay for about 40€, is it worth it?

Yes, a chip is always harmful because it puts more strain on the engine, but I'm sure you know that.
It doesn't really matter to me personally. I had one installed in my own car, and it was at a mileage of 239,000 km. Now it has 260,000 km on it, and it's running like .
I would say that at 90,000 kilometers, the engine is really starting to break in. B.Eng (FH) u. KFZ Meister

Before you invest those 40 EUR on e B a y, you'd better burn them .
The current financial loss would be the same, and your engine would last longer.
Otherwise, 90,000 is fine. I had mine done at 140,000 miles; nowadays...
he has 212,000 - and he's running .
Best regards, Rudi.

Hi Mimmo & Steffarn!
The chip itself is not harmful; if anything, it's the driving style that's the problem.
'If you only occasionally use the extra power for acceleration and don't use the higher RPMs to gain an additional 10 km/h on the highway, you shouldn't have any problems. If something breaks, it would have happened even without the chip.'
In this case, high engine speeds can cause more damage than high torque.
In my opinion, if someone uses a chip to start the machine slightly earlier, it can actually help to prolong its lifespan.
If you push it to its absolute limit, you'll likely break it. A chip just makes it happen faster.
Mine didn't get the chip installed until 120,000 km.

Yes, you're right, the word "harmful" doesn't quite capture it.
However, what is true is that wear and tear increases due to the higher torque.
but which only adds a negligible amount to the weight.
I already knew I would chip my car before I bought it because the 110 hp version felt too weak, and a V6 TDI would be too expensive to maintain.
However, I wouldn't buy a cheap, knock-off chip from eBay for 40 euros, but rather a...

90,000 km: Brand new! Or, as Steffarn already said: Properly broken in...
In my opinion, 90,000 km is a good starting point.
I installed my 10 cent (switchable) chip at approximately 215,000 km, and I removed it again at 240,000 km (it needs to last >350,000 km and save fuel, currently ~4.8 L/100km), but it was great...
I wouldn't take a used chip either, but that's a matter of discussion (SEARCH!!!).
EDIT: Sorry, I now see that I've pulled a corpse out of the basement...

The mileage primarily tells you little about the condition of the engine. An engine can be at the end of its life after 70,000 km (e.g., the AAZ engine without an oil cooler when constantly running at full throttle), and just as easily be in top condition after 300,000 km. It depends on the driving style and the maintenance.
'An 'egay' chip tuning for around 40€ can potentially quickly damage your engine. Before you invest that 40€ in such cheap tuning, it's better to spend the money on better oil for your engine.'
When I think about how much work it is to understand which component is relevant for what, and where it is located, I would never give up a carefully done tuning for just 40€ .

Look at the date... meanwhile, it has already reached 200,000 km.
