Hello,
I recently worked on an Audi A4.
2.5L TDI 110KW: Glow plugs were replaced, and it was discovered that two of the plugs (on the same side of the engine) were heavily oiled. I can't explain this, as the engine doesn't have abnormally high oil consumption. Could it be the head gasket?
Regards,
Markus D.

Hi Markus,

Always include the mileage icon_exclaim.gif icon_exclaim.gif icon_exclaim.gif.

Are you sure it's not a mixture of soot and diesel? -> The injectors are leaking!
Is condensation excluded due to a previous short trip?

Best regards, Christian.

The vehicle has approximately 100,000 km on it. I've also considered the possibility of a faulty fuel injector. However, it's definitely engine oil, and the spark plug hasn't been fouled. Last summer (at around 90,000 km), the engine received a new turbocharger because the old one was leaking oil. But that's probably not the source of the problem (since it only starts at the manifold).
Best regards,
Markus D.

hmm, so if the engine doesn't consume any oil (can you manage 15,000 km without topping it up??), then the most I can imagine is an air swirl, for example, caused by deposits in the intake manifold (->from the exhaust gas recirculation system), that constantly carries the fine oil droplets in the intake air there icon_confused.gif. But that's just speculation.

I can't imagine a blown head gasket with that mileage! Try opening the oil filler cap while the engine is running... if a hurricane of air rushes out, then the head gasket is definitely gone. However, I still don't know how the oil could get there while the engine is running.

Best regards, Christian.

Hi,

My father has an Audi 80 TDI 1Z, manufactured in 1994, with 270,000 km on the odometer (the oil level is then at the minimum mark). icon_exclaim.gif

You don't need to top up anything between oil changes (every 15,000 km). Maximum difference: 1/4 liter. (Golf IV, 90 hp, manufactured in 1998, 130,000 km).

AHF engine with 130,000 km. If I drive "normally," I don't need to add any oil. However, when driving with a lot of full throttle and high RPMs, I have to add about half a liter every 10,000 km.
With my old turbocharger at a mileage of 82,000 km, the oil consumption could reach as high as 0.5 liters per 1000 km when driving aggressively and using thin oil.

Best regards, Rainer.

AFN, 197,000 km. Maximum fuel consumption: 0.2 liters per 10,000 km with a chip tuning upgrade providing 140 hp / 305 Nm of torque.

Besides the water pump, everything else on the engine is original!

MOBIL 0W-40

Regards,

Manuel.
