Hello everyone,
I recently got a new diagnostic cable for my Octavia.
I connected it and played around with it a bit, even experimenting with the encoding at one point.
Accessed the engine control unit (ECU), but nothing was adjusted.
The engine was running at idle speed.
Suddenly, it started making a horrible whistling noise (at idle). It sounded like 'bsbbb,' 'bssssssbb.'
Something like a turbocharger, but a bit more subtle.
I parked the vehicle and disconnected the diagnostic tool.
Restarting, everything is back to normal.
I'm not sure if it's related to my diagnosis or even to the surgery itself.
'Right now, I definitely have this whistling/whirring sound during acceleration between 1900 and 2000 rpm, both at partial and full throttle. It appears suddenly and disappears just as abruptly. It kind of sounds like a turbocharger that's seen better days, but it only happens within a very limited RPM range.'
Could it be that I messed something up with the coding?
Could other components also cause such noises (e.g., the PD elements)?
Which measurement blocks should I start logging so that we can analyze the data and draw more conclusions?
'Thank you very much!!'
My vehicle:
Octavia 1Z.
BLS engine, 105 hp TDI, filter installed from the factory.
Manufactured in 2007.
14,500 kilometers (or miles, depending on the context).

Hello Martin,
If you are sure that you haven't made any changes, then nothing may have changed.
The sentences about wastegates and variable geometry turbos are just meaningless buzzwords; they have nothing to do with reality.
Describing a sound with letters is usually pointless because everyone imagines something different when they read it.
Please record it and post it here as an MP3 or similar file.
Greetings.
Martin.

No, I'm not sure if I changed anything. I definitely messed around with the comfort control module. I didn't touch the engine control module. Unfortunately, I only copied and saved the original coding afterwards. The 'bssssb' was meant to indicate that the 'ssss' is a separate section. It really happens suddenly and goes away just as quickly. I need to see if I can capture it audibly on an MP3 file.

What software do you have?
Do you have a "debug" directory, and inside it, a file named "Codinglog.txt"?
Okay, please provide the German text you would like me to translate into English. I will only provide the translation.

I recently bought this:
http://shop.dieselschrauber.de/product_info.php/products_id/46
Install the latest software from the CD.
I'll need to check at home for the exact version. Also, I need to look in the debug directory.

Sure, I will translate the text from German to English and provide only the translation without any explanations. Please provide the text you would like me to translate.
If you don't have a "debug" setting, simply create one, and then VCDS will log the remappings to that location.

Thank you very much!
I have this debug comparison.
I made modifications to the radio and the comfort control unit.
Interestingly, it's the comfort control unit that needs modification, but not with the changes we were hoping for.
(I was playing around with the horn and lights when closing it). However, it never actually honked.
Only boosted with the turbo or with the EGR system?
I've reset everything. Now it's working normally again!

I just checked my logs again (since it's working normally now).
I have highlighted the area in question in yellow.
My AGR (Abgasrückführung) rate is significantly above the target range, fluctuating between 1600 and 2800 RPM.
Is that normal?

Okay, now I have the audio file as requested!
The file is located at www.lingg.de/pfeife.mp3.
Sure, I'd be happy to translate the text for you. Please provide the German text that you would like me to translate into English.
- The microphone is located in the engine compartment. At higher speeds, wind noise is added. You can hear me cough once. That's crazy, it probably reached all the way into the engine compartment .
- The whistle has changed. It sounds more like a turbo now than it did at the beginning.
- Furthermore, the whistling sound only occurs shortly after the engine starts and takes in fuel. If I keep the engine idling, the whistling stops on its own above approximately 2500 RPM.
- I was on vacation with my campervan. In the fourth gear, at 80 km/h, under partial load, it constantly makes a grinding noise. It's absolutely awful.
- Starting from the 55th second, you can also hear a whistling sound in the exhaust.
The vehicle has less than 20,000 kilometers on the odometer.
Thank you very much!

I actually bought a digital recorder and a microphone specifically because of the request to describe the sound more professionally. Maybe you could take a listen sometime. I would be very grateful for any feedback you might have.
As it sounds, that is definitely not okay.
Thank you very much!

Sorry for my silly comment.
What I'm hearing is a turbocharger, nothing more, nothing less. You could check if there's a slight leak somewhere in the charge air piping... but I don't hear anything serious; the noise is perfectly normal. Depending on the vehicle, a turbocharger can be louder or quieter. This depends on many factors, such as its location and how it's controlled.
You're buying extra sound equipment because of this... sorry, I have nothing to say about that.
You have the perfect tools for this: Take your diagnostic device with a laptop, get into the car, and create a log as described here. Then, when you get home, take your time to analyze the data after formatting it graphically...
If you notice anything unusual, report it!

Okay, thank you very much.
I can definitively say that I've only started hearing the turbo recently. Before that, it was completely silent. I know what I'm talking about. I've already run an AAZ engine with 1.1 bar of boost (stock is 0.6 bar). But in the Octavia, there was nothing to hear at first. I paid attention to it. It appeared suddenly. The car has no modifications whatsoever.

Another reason to check if there's an intercooler leak.

Hello everyone,
Within the warranty period, my car dealership never heard the whistling sound.
Meanwhile, I have switched to a different car dealership.
Now I no longer have the full warranty, and another mechanic found the problem. It's a seal on the EGR valve. The cost is €173. I can pick it up on Monday.
From the beginning, it was clear to me: what I'm hearing is the turbo, but it doesn't sound like a typical turbo problem.
It's extremely frustrating that I reported this problem while it was still under warranty, that it hasn't changed at all, and that it's only being fixed now.
The old authorities will never see me again. The only time they'll see me again is when I present them with the manuscript.
Okay, my new car has already been ordered. I just wanted to get the old vehicle ready for sale. If it had been the turbo version, the extended warranty would have covered it. But they don't pay anything for seals.

Sure?
Which clause in which insurance policy states that?
I have this extended warranty insurance on both of my VWs for the third and fourth years.
I also only read it after having to pay for a xenon headlight.
However, an assembled engine component (with a gasket installed) is not considered a wear part.

[Translating...]Hallo,
Martin
