Hello,
"I've recently been experiencing starting problems with my 1.9 TDI."
Situation: The outside temperature is below 10°C. After a short warm-up period, the engine either doesn't start or only starts after a very long cranking process. During this time, thick white smoke comes out of the exhaust pipe, and there is a strong smell of diesel. When the engine is preheated (e.g., using a heater for at least 15 minutes), it starts relatively easily (it might jerk briefly during startup but then runs normally).
Otherwise, I have no problems once it's running; there's no smoke, no soot, full power (180 km/h), no strange noises, and the fuel consumption is normal.
Here's the translation:
"I've already ruled out the following: The glow plug system is completely fine. (Even if I disconnect the engine temperature sensor and it glows continuously, the engine still only starts reluctantly). The air filter is new, the diesel system is leak-free with a new filter and no air bubbles, and each injector is working (I checked them one by one while idling)."
I strongly suspect there's something related to the start of boost. However, you can't just adjust the electronic ESP (Electronic Stability Program). I've also heard about a "KW screw" in other posts, but I replaced the timing belt 15,000 km ago, and so far there have been no problems.
Perhaps someone with personal experience on the topic or relevant expertise can help me.
Thank you in advance.

Hello,
That sounds like a very late start to the support program.
It is true that this pump initiates the injection process itself via the needle lift control device.
is adjusted, but it works via hydraulic pressure, which unfortunately only becomes active when the engine is running.
Engine is included.
Throughout the summer, everything went well because it wasn't too far off, but now it needs...
Your engine's timing is set to be X degrees before Top Dead Center (TDC).
My suggestion would be to carefully adjust the injection pump slightly towards 'earlier' timing.
until you can hear that typical TDI engine rumble right after starting it.
Two to three degrees really make a remarkable difference!
Hi hardyscheibe.

Hello,
Engine code 1Z? If so, please search for "timing belt pulley," as it tends to loosen.

Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
