Water Pump Replacement: When to Change at 90,000 Miles?

Hi everyone!!!

I got a quote from the mechanic for the 90,000 km service. They want to replace the water pump on my AFN engine 'just like that.' I can't imagine that's standard procedure, though, right?

I wouldn't participate in that either, because the water pump doesn't run directly off the timing belt .

For water pumps driven by the timing belt, it is common practice to replace them at the same time. The cost of a damaged or torn timing belt can be significant, and it's often not worth the risk compared to the relatively low cost of the water pump. However, it's not always necessary to replace the water pump, but a visual inspection of the water pump is the minimum that should be done.

We decided to proactively replace the water pump in one of our AFN TDIs after 380,000 km... visually, the old one still looked very good.
So, it wouldn't have been necessary yet...

Depending on the vehicle's popularity, we generally perform the warranty inspection at higher mileage intervals, unless the customer strongly disagrees with this approach.

In the past, with some vehicle types, the water pump would fail around 130,000 km. Then, all the related components would have to be removed (since the water pump is driven by the timing belt in almost all vehicles), and it would cost a lot of money again.

'Those 30 euros for a wapu probably won't make a huge difference.'

There are also vehicles where the water pump never fails (including the tensioner pulley, greetings to Japan).
and there are customers who were stranded on the highway because their WAPU (vehicle access permit) had expired, all because they wanted to save 30 euros }.

I can't say how the TDI models are, as we don't have many of them. Therefore, I don't have any experience with their acceleration.

'With my AFN engine, I replaced the water pump at 155,000 km. The reason was a slight leak from a small metal plug in the housing. To avoid suddenly losing all the coolant while driving on the highway, I proactively replaced it.'

Your arguments for swapping the water pump with the timing belt seem very plausible. What still makes me hesitate isn't the 62 euros for the water pump, but the cost for installation and removal on my AFN. The friendly staff charges 151.80 for that!!!!!!!!
