Hello,
Since there's always something going on with the car, and Christmas is just around the corner, I'm already looking for a suitable gift for myself icon_smile.gif.

Okay, so the question is: There are a lot of different connectors and things, and I'm not sure which one I need.
I would like to, for example, connect a 1998 Passat with an AFN engine, a 2001 Golf 4 with an ALH engine, and a Golf 5 from 2005 with a BRA (90PS?) diesel engine. If newer models are also compatible, that would be great, but it's not necessarily essential if it involves a significant price increase icon_wink.gif.

How about the OBD connector? Could you also use it to read out data from a Land Rover Freelander Td4?

"Thank you very much!"
Phil.

To be well-prepared for the future, I would personally choose:

http://shop.dieselschrauber.de/vcds-obd2-profi-diagnose-kkl-can-p-46.php

This gives you a diagnostic depth of nearly 100% for VAG vehicles - no other tool offers more for the price.

Hello,

Quote:
LandRover Freelander Td4

If it's new enough to support the OBD2 protocol, then probably yes.
The professional system can support OBD2 via K-Line and CAN. If it's intended for the G4 and G5 models, it's the right choice. Of course, it's also suitable for all other VAG models. icon_wink.gif

Best regards, Rainer.

"I have already diagnosed a 2001 Freelander TD4. It used the ISO 9141-2 ('K-Line') protocol. For the initial connection, the engine had to be running, but after that, the diagnosis could be performed even with the engine off. I remember the real-time data display as being quite slow."

Even with a BMW, I have been able to successfully read and clear the error memory from the MSTG (Main System Troubleshooting Guide).

Using the diagnostic technique mentioned above, you're unlikely to make any mistakes. Typically, "multi-brand" diagnostic tools available on the market for a comparable price only support the K-Line and OBDII protocols, which is also what VCDS supports for non-VAG vehicles.

What is the production year of your TD4? I would rate the support for BMW ECUs as very good.
Clear error codes, read them, and access many data points!

Specifically with newer vehicles, a lot of information can be accessed via the OBDII port.
Rail pressure, differential pressure of the DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter), temperatures at various locations, etc.

Okay, let me put it this way - besides coding and service reset functions, VCDS can offer surprisingly comprehensive features for foreign vehicles, considering the price.
