Engine Control Unit (ECU) software version and chip tuning check

Would it be helpful to include a note in the diagnosis indicating that a newer software version exists for the engine control unit, and if so, which one?

At the same time, for vehicles meeting EU5 standards or higher, an integrity check of the engine control unit (ECU) software could be performed to determine whether it is original or has been modified.

How useful do you find this feature?

I would find that very useful.

- I usually have VCDS with me when buying a car or during a test drive.
With this function, one could already infer certain "things" and potentially make a better purchasing decision .

- When troubleshooting issues on customer vehicles, knowing about undocumented or unauthorized modifications could make it easier to pinpoint the source of certain problems.

- or alternatively, you can inform the customer that a newer software version is available, which the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) intends as a solution to the problem.

I would also find a reference to a more recent version helpful. You don't necessarily have to rely on the workshop for that information.

Basic probability and statistics.
It's highly likely that the corresponding tool will read the data through diagnostics, making user manipulation a rather unlikely scenario – almost like finding a "pink elephant." While it might be technically possible, who would do it and why would they bother? It's absolutely manageable.
And a data or software version that doesn't appear anywhere else would be even more suspicious.

A test version of KOBD2CHECK, which provides information about newer software versions and indicates whether an existing CVN is genuine (i.e., the engine control unit software is original), is complete.

Download: see attached .rar archive. Please note that the trial version only works with the Diesel Mechanic RKS+CAN interface. This is included with the "OBD2 Diagnostic Kit" and the "CAN-USB Interface Kit".

In order to display the information, KOBD2CHECK needs internet access. To start the scan, click the [Scan] button in KOBD2CHECK.

I'm using Kobd2check v1.70 - SCAN and I want to check if there's a newer software version available for my engine control unit, or whether the current CVN is the original one. However, it always only displays the existing software version and CVN, regardless of which vehicle I scan? And this is happening even though I have an internet connection.

No, as I interpret the database, the vehicle you mentioned is the only one that you checked.

The database grows as it is used more. However, for your VAG part number of the engine control unit, there was no entry yet for this software version; it will be automatically added when the data is read. The more people scan their cars, the faster the database grows.
9980 should currently be the latest software version for your engine control unit.

If a newer software version or the same version with a different CVN exists in the database, KOBD2Check will display corresponding information to you (an active online connection is required).
