I didn't say that I had any knowledge of the subject, so please be kind and don't assume I'm trying to act superior. I was simply looking for explanations that seem more plausible than others. That's all, and that's exactly what Occam's Razor (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ockhams_Rasiermesser)) does, even if you make fun of it. I am happy to be educated; after all, one never stops learning. You clarified the issue with the tax devices, even for someone as clueless as me ("until proven otherwise," as I also said, and which is what you set out to do).

Regarding the 390,000 km mileage: the bodywork was at its limit, the shifting mechanism and linkages were worn out, but the engine wasn't running badly, as I mentioned – it had a new head gasket, turbocharger, clutch, and transmission. Only the fuel consumption was higher than the original level of 4.8-5.3 liters, about 0.5-0.8 liters more (due to wear and tear). Presumably, like all gradual issues, it's something you don't immediately notice when driving the car regularly, but only when there's a longer break. You are probably right that the average ESP (electronic stability program) fails around 250,000 km, but that's like with all averages: on average, the pond was 1 meter deep, but still, the cow drowned. I travel a lot in Poland and Czechia and I see what long-distance drivers are using there. Okay, there are significantly fewer AFN engines compared to previous years (when does your cited entry date from?), but one thing is certain: the AFN has been replaced by the 1.9 PD engine in all its variants, and I've followed that trend.
AAncient junk?

Best regards, B.

P.S.: How do you currently assess the prognosis for the ARL engine in a Leon with 120,000 km (approximately 74,000 miles)? It's already 15 years old, so is it also considered "old junk"?

ARL and ASZ engines are very durable, and they don't have wear-prone parts like the VP37 injection pump, which frequently fails at high mileage, leading to engine damage when driven aggressively.
In the case of 2V PD-TDIs, the common rail elements can become embedded in the cylinder head, leading to a failure of the fuel system's sealing.

Unfortunately, for hobby mechanics, replacing the injectors or even the entire PD (Pumpe-Düse) components in a PD engine is not an option and can be expensive. At 300,000 km, it's often uneconomical to replace the complete units, essentially leading to a total loss. Therefore, avoid putting anything harmful into the fuel tank and refrain from constantly driving at high speeds with high mileage, as this will help prolong the engine's lifespan.
The activation pin for each PD element should also be kept track of; it's included in the sealing kit anyway.

Let's put it this way: ASZ and ARL vehicles will remain fully functional for a longer period, but they are more expensive to repair in the event of an accident. icon_cool.gif

Die Callers should know why they are calling.

What do you mean by "don't pour garbage into the tank"? I usually refuel in Eastern European countries because experience has shown that the diesel there is not diluted with the unfortunate German biofuel and offers lower consumption and greater range. I've been doing this for about 14 years and 700,000 km.

So, if I reconcile your statement with my driving habits, then nothing should stand in the way of a longer "symbiosis." Especially since the engine often sees 2-stroke oil at a ratio of about 1:200. Or would that also be fundamentally wrong?

Best regards, B.

Then you must have a very poor set of experiences... icon_wink.gif

The "Bioplörre" is, in fact, mandatory across the entire continent of EUROPE.
Unless someone is selling fuel that does not comply with the EN590 standard. This fuel must contain a biofuel component (minimum 2% - maximum 7%).
If it doesn't comply with the EN590 standard, you usually have a mixture of water and sand.
Only heating oil has no bio component; however, it contains five times more sulfur.
Even "Ultimate" fuels contain a biofuel component (specifically, the minimum of 2%), unless the manufacturer is circumventing the EN590 standard (i.e., exceeding the requirements of EN590).

SinAre you okay?

Best regards,
B.

Yes, I know. But those who understand the mentality of Eastern Europeans also know that there can be significant differences between what is considered "mandatory" and what is actually enforced. And that things tend to move more slowly there than they do here. Let's see how long it lasts.
...

Right, and that's why they've been adding up to 7% of "bio-stuff" for about 10 years now, just like everyone else.
Because it's also about money there, and if they don't do it, they have to pay CO2 penalties. They receive money from the EU for "eco-nonsense." You honestly believe they would let that money slip through their fingers?
Furthermore, fuel tests conducted in Eastern Europe have shown that these fuels contain the same proportion of biofuels as German fuel.

The story about the "better" fuel without biofuel content in Eastern Europe is and remains a popular myth.

"@Bertil: At the time, Süddeutsche Zeitung wrote the following:"

Higher production costs.

Whether this will lead to a decrease in fuel prices is questionable, because the oil companies are claiming higher production costs for biofuels.

LSure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:

The standard EN 590 describes the properties of diesel fuels; it defines uniform conditions in all countries of the EU, as well as Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland. The standard refers to the underlying measurement methods used in each case.
