VW Polo 1.4 TDI: Starting Issues, Misfires, Stalling

This is my first post, and unfortunately, I'm having problems with my first diesel car. It's a Polo 9N, 1.4 TDI, 75 hp, engine code BAY. The problem started with the car being difficult to start. This mostly happened when it was cold or when the fuel tank was less than half full.
"Recently, the engine's behavior has been getting worse. It stutters when idling, doesn't respond to acceleration at first, and produces a lot of smoke. The smoke is dark, but not really black."
In the recent past, the symptoms were as described above and only occurred when the engine was warm. The coolant temperature reached 90 degrees Celsius. This morning, a new stage of the problem emerged. After driving for about 1 kilometer, the car simply stopped working and refused to start until I tried cranking it for a long time.
