Hi,
Here are people with clever lists .
An engine control unit (ECU) from a VW T4 with the ACV engine, manufactured in 1999.
ET Number:
074 906 021 L
Is this the MSA12 or the MSA 15?
CAN-Bus: Yes or no?

That answers the question about the EDC, thank you.
If the MSG (Message System Gateway) was only manufactured until 1997, then the CAN-Bus system would also likely be phased out. This started happening in 1999 with the T4 model.
Interestingly, the MSG sticker on the device displays the year 1998, while the device itself comes from a T4 model manufactured in 1999.
But I think Ecat isn't always 100% accurate either.
I've never seen the car at the MSG (and it's probably long gone now), so I can't check there whether or not it has a CAN bus.
Sure, here's the translation:
"Addendum:"
I've now taken a look myself in the Bosch Ecat system, and under that ET number, there are two entries. The first one is as described, and the second one says:
Original Equipment (OE)
0281001640
Naming.
Engine control unit, diesel injection.
Manufacturing position.
01/2016
Type formula.
EDC MSA 15.5-7.1
Product information.
Device is repairable. "www.bosch-repair-service.com"
Original equipment.
0281001639
Article status.
Discontinued items.
Bitte gib mir den deutschen Text, den du übersetzt haben möchtest.
I'll check the Bosch part number to see if it ends in *1639 or *1640.
The second entry seems to be for replacement devices.

I would say that the first device was being delivered in production until around 1997. According to the usual automotive regulations, the manufacturer must be able to offer spare parts for 10 years after that. Therefore, the second device, which was manufactured until almost 10 years later (probably as a last-time buy).
However, the function of the two devices is likely to be completely identical and corresponds to the functionality available before 1997 (i.e., without CAN).
That's just my subjective conclusion based on what I wrote before. Okay, so without any prior knowledge of the control unit itself.
Greetings.
Guste.

My MSG has a Bosch part number ending in *40 and is dated March 31, 1998.
CAN-Bus is therefore unlikely.
