Here's a Touran with 70,000 km where the connecting rod bearing on cylinder number 4 is defective.
In my opinion, the main bearings also show excessive wear, but I haven't had the opportunity to compare it to other engines with similar mileage on a daily basis.

I know that the connecting rod bearings tend to wear out on BLS engines, but I'm not sure about that at this particular mileage.

What experiences do you have?
The connecting rod on the 4-cylinder engine also shows signs of wear; I'm not sure whether I should just smooth it out or replace it.

What would you do: replace the connecting rods? Rebuild or have the crankshaft re-ground? Used engine.

I still need to disassemble the oil pump to see if I can find anything. This is the first time I've worked on this car, so I don't know its history. It's possible that foreign objects may have entered the oil circulation system at some point and potentially blocked a bore (this happened to me once with a tractor). The bores in the crankshaft are clear.

Hi.

I don't find that typical either, since at least the engine block itself is found in several different models. I suspect that the owner may not have been very diligent with maintenance, or perhaps experienced a moment when the oil level was too low.

I would suggest looking into the price of a used one; that will save you the work and, in my opinion, is likely to be the most cost-effective option. If you do it properly, the bearings should be replaced and the shaft reworked... but I can hardly imagine that this would be economically viable.

Hi there.

If you start with engine rebuilding, like honing the crankshaft... then you also need to hone the cylinder, replace the piston rings... that's the bare minimum, and it will definitely cost a four-digit amount, certainly not starting with the number "1".

Thanks to salvage yards, there are plenty of engine parts from the VW group available for relatively cheap prices. For example, when a friend's BKC (1.9 TDI 105PS) engine failed in his Seat Altea, we found a complete engine, except for the alternator, with all its attachments for €300 at a local salvage yard. We were able to test it while it was still installed, and for that price, it even came disassembled with a 4-week warranty. It's hard to find anything cheaper than that.

Edit:
I don't know if the connecting rod bearings tend to wear out at this mileage.

Of course, it's the connecting rod bearings and not the main bearings that tend to wear out prematurely in the BLS engine, as I wrote yesterday.

Can someone tell me if this is bad?
The connecting rods, pistons, piston pins, and screws weigh:
Cylinder 1: 1410 grams
Cylinder 2: 1413 grams
Cylinder 3: 1414 grams
Cylinder 4: 1422 grams

Schlimm? Für den maximal ruhig laufenden R4 Motor? Yes!
Für den Durchschnittsmotor eines Michel? No.
"12 grams or less than 1% is still within the tolerance for mass production, as far as I know. But it seems like a lot to me when I think about the specific weight of steel (connecting rods) or aluminum (pistons). You can almost see the volume with your own eyes?"
