Hello!

I have a F9Q engine that had a new turbocharger installed because the shaft was broken. According to the previous owner, he drove the car for about 30 minutes before it suddenly started smoking heavily. There's also oil leaking from the exhaust. The engine runs smoothly!

I initially checked the crankcase ventilation system and opened the oil filler cap to compare the exhaust fumes with my everyday car, which has the same engine. The crankcase ventilation system seems to be working correctly. Also, there is no more exhaust coming out of it than from my everyday car.

After that, I checked the oil return line, all the way into the engine block. Then, I intended to measure the compression through the glow plug holes. Unfortunately, a glow plug broke off during the process, which meant the cylinder head had to be removed.

Okay, here's the translation:

"Now, my question: If the piston rings are defective, could enough oil be forced through the turbocharger to the point where oil also drips out of the exhaust? However, the cylinder walls all appear to be in very good condition. The car has approximately 160,000 kilometers on it."
Is it advisable to disassemble the pistons, even though the cylinder walls look good and show no signs of scratches or similar damage?

Did I miss something?

"Silly question, but have you inspected the new turbo? It's just that I'm wondering if it's faulty and that's why so much oil is coming from there... Since you've already removed the cylinder head, you can also see if there's oil in the intake manifold or not... In my opinion, it's more likely that the new turbo is defective, or that there's still some oil from the old turbo in the intercooler, which is now being burned, than that the piston rings are suddenly letting through so much oil, which in my opinion would have to be burned if the car otherwise runs "normally"."

Best regards, Tobias.

Hello Tobias,

"Sorry, I forgot to mention that the intercooler and the catalytic converter have been replaced. I only drove the car about 100 meters, and very slowly. There was already a lot of smoke coming out when the turbocharger started to spin."

There is free-flowing oil on the compressor side of the turbocharger. Similarly, there is also oil present on the other side.
Die Kolben selbst besitzen etwas Ölkruste. See photos...
But I could imagine that this might be normal? - The car didn't really get that warm the last time.

And did you also look at the turbo? Things like wave behavior, etc.? Were the oil lines possibly swapped? You never know icon_lol.gif.

Yes, absolutely, that's a good game.

If someone had swapped the oil line, then you would have to cut it and piece it back together, or install the turbocharger backwards and weld the connections icon_biggrin.gif.

No oil in the water, no water in the oil. The oil lines are 100% clear on both sides.

"It's still strange that the turbo is so oily on the exhaust side, but dry on the cylinder head side (exhaust)."

It doesn't seem like the oil is flowing through the engine to me... You could (if you have the means) apply pressurized oil to the supply line while the turbo is removed and see if it actually returns through the return line, or if it's finding another way out.

"There's just one thing that still makes me a bit suspicious... According to the previous owner, a workshop installed the entire system and fitted a new turbocharger. The old turbocharger is still in the possession of the previous owner. However, can a pressure sensor look like the one in the photo?"

The car had been in the garage since 2015 until yesterday. It probably saw the outside world occasionally, though. Still, could it have been a used loader or a completely refurbished one back then?

What could be wrong with this can? Maybe I'm just not seeing it X. But I would say mine looks pretty much the same.

To my knowledge, Garret never officially produced or sold reconditioned turbocharger kits or rebuilt chargers. However, you can find them for sale on eBay. It's difficult to determine who rebuilt them, how they were rebuilt, and what quality they are. The same applies to what was installed in your vehicle.

Oh yeah, this turbo doesn't look new to me... maybe a used one was installed?

I mean, it looks as run-down as it does on the outside. The can from my everyday car (the same model, but with 15 horsepower less) looks newer.

So, is a new turbocharger enough? icon_rolleyes.gif I mean, can a new turbocharger break down so quickly...?

I'm also surprised by the appearance, especially if it was supposed to be a new turbo. And even more so, considering the car has been sitting in the garage for 5 years...

You could try taking the turbo from your other car, just to see if it's the turbo that's causing the problem or something else.

That probably won't happen, just by simply taking the turbocharger out here and putting it in there. icon_eek.gif
Mine also has a different exhaust flange.
If it's really just due to that, then I'll invest in a new charger.
They don't cost that much anymore.

Achso, du hast im ersten Post geschrieben dass beide Fahrzeuge den gleichen Motor besitzen, von daher ging ich davon aus dass dies passt. Ob es wirklich nur daran liegt, kann ich dir von hier aus nicht sagen. Just speculate.

You could, for testing purposes, take the turbo from your other car... then you'll know if it's the turbo or something else.

Okay, I don't see a "new" turbocharger in the pictures. With that amount of oil in the turbocharger, it would probably be difficult to drive. icon_razz.gif

As one of the previous speakers mentioned: With such quantities of oil, you can immediately tell whether it's coming from the engine or exhaust manifold, or directly from the turbocharger itself.

Best regards, Rainer.
