Hello everyone,
For clarification: I've built a generator that is intended to only power the heating system, which is a standard oil-fired heating system with three circulation pumps, an oil injection system, and an oil pump. The total peak power demand is approximately 500W.
"First, I bought a pre-built 'silent' diesel generator. It delivered 5kW at 220V at 3000 RPM, and it was incredibly noisy in the garage, making a racket like Rumpelstiltskin himself. Despite being fully enclosed. You can't put up with that for long."
"After that, I acquired a 60-year-old Farymann swirl chamber or pre-chamber engine with a large flywheel and a rated speed of 1200 RPM. This engine drives a 140W alternator, which, through a buffer battery, powers a Victron inverter producing 220V sine wave power. It's already less stressful, but has the potential for lower speeds. Of course, it runs most smoothly at 1200 RPM, which is the speed it was optimized for."
The part I purchased was likely modified to achieve higher RPM and power, with adjustments made to the governor, and instead of a DN4S1 nozzle, a DN4S3 nozzle was installed. However, everything worked fine overall. The problem was that it was knocking under partial load, which made me worried about the bearings. The knocking disappeared at higher RPM.
Now, regarding the diesel engine components: Replacing the installed (non-standard) DN4S3 injectors with the specified DN4S1 injectors resulted in a slight improvement in terms of knocking noise at lower engine speeds, around 800 RPM. The power output at this speed is also sufficient for my purposes, even with the standard injectors.
"When I adjust the throttle to 500 RPM, the engine starts to sputter again. However, I would like to operate it in this speed range because it produces a pleasant sound that can be listened to for a few hours in the background, even in an emergency."
I have now read in the Bosch book "Diesel Engine Management" that the DN4S1 is a swirl injector that has the same spray angle from the start of injection, which in this case is 1 degree. At least, that's how I understood it. I adjusted the nozzle to the specified 120 bar, and the estimated spray angle is 30 degrees. So, 1 degree should result in a sharp jet rather than a spray.
The nozzle DN4S3, set to 120 bar, may produce a more powerful spray pattern, but it's also likely to create a spray angle of around 30 degrees.
"I've now acquired a DN4SD24 (BDN4SD24 JJC) injector, a swirl injector, and I'd like to try it out. Bosch states that swirl injectors initially produce a thin pre-injection, followed by the main injection, with the purpose of achieving a smoother combustion. This is exactly what I want. I don't need more power; I want a smooth and pleasant engine operation."
Can I safely test the nozzle without damaging the engine?
Can anyone shed some light on the Bosch designations for fuel injectors? What do the letters and numbers mean? The manual doesn't explain this. Also, what should the spray pattern look like?
Apparently, the same type of nozzle is offered under a wide variety of names. Hours of searching on Google haven't helped me find what I'm looking for.
Here are a few more pictures that show the difference between the sockets.
Thank you and best regards.
Hugo.

Hello,
Based on my gut feeling, I wouldn't expect any problems if the opening pressure, spray pattern, and flow rate match the original nozzles. Therefore, I would compare them to the originals, or ideally, use the original nozzles.
Wenn mir der Lauf nicht weich genug ist und der Förderwinkel eh nicht ausgenutzt wird, drehe ich den Förderbeginn etwas nach spät und gut ist es. KoPrice: 0€
Overall, a questionable endeavor. Given the low power requirements, I would have simply purchased a sine wave inverter for the car battery, to be used in the, pay attention now, car.
It doesn't bounce around or make noise in the garage either.
Sure, here is the translation of the text from German to English:
"LG" is an abbreviation for "Liebe Grüße," which means "Best regards" or "Best wishes" in English.

Hello, fellow diesel mechanics.
Plan A: Drive the car up to the house, open the hood, connect an inverter to the jump-start terminals. Then, just let it idle. It's quiet and doesn't smell. And a modern diesel engine consumes surprisingly little fuel when idling, which I know from a nearly 24-hour traffic jam many years ago during the winter on the highway.
But I'm fascinated by those old single-cylinder diesel engines, and I enjoy tinkering with them and trying to get them to run properly.
Unfortunately, the starting point of the pump on this old Farymann engine is not adjustable. At most, adjustments can be made using shims at the injection pump and by adjusting the injection pressure. However, this doesn't really change the engine's performance significantly within a reasonable range.
It's probably not the optimal engine, but as they say, it's what it is.
I was particularly interested in deciphering these myriad Bosch designations so that I could experiment a bit with the injectors, but I haven't found any information yet.
Greetings.
Hugo.

Hello Herbert,
Thank you for the link; that's exactly the book for understanding the theoretical foundations. It's a shame the excerpt is so short, but I'll be having my birthday soon . I first have to sneak €100 past the family's financial minister, who is already very sensitive about spending on this kind of thing.
Thank you and best regards.
Hugo.
