hello

Does anyone know someone who is familiar with engine wiring harnesses and their fabrication? I'm looking to replace a 1Z engine with a more modern one, possibly an AFN, or something else that would be a better fit.

Best regards, Christian.

With the AFN, you can keep the existing wiring harness. It only needs a different valve for controlling the boost pressure.

'Replacing the pump-injector system is not recommended because it involves a huge amount of work, and you have to change the entire system (engine, wiring harness, speedometer, immobilizer, engine mounts, possibly the transmission, etc.).'

The AFN likely involves the least amount of effort. It is externally identical to the 1Z model, except for the turbocharger and the intake manifold.

hello ralf

Do you mean that the connectors from the 1Z engine will all fit the AFN engine, and that no changes to the wiring harness are necessary? I also still have the old 1Z engine (182Nm). And what about the immobilizer? Do you perhaps know someone who has done this personally before? I somehow need more power. icon_razz.gif

bye christian

I'm not sure about that. Not all 1Z connectors are the same. In my case, all the connectors fit. It should work, though.

...I think there was something about that...

Where is it?

Take a look at this; it's specifically about converting an AFN (110) engine to an Audi 80 (90).

hello

Thanks for the tip, I'm familiar with that report. I'm also aware of the electrical problems mentioned in the report. It's possible that there are now people selling wiring harnesses for that. There are many companies that install TDI engines in T3 vans, but not in B4 models. Oh well, too bad.

bye christian

I don't really understand what's so complicated about the Audi. On the Golf, it just works. Does the Audi 80 have a different 1Z engine than the Golf?

Otherwise, you might have to modify the wiring harness.
The issue is not the immobilizer. I already emailed you about that via private message.

The 1Z engine itself isn't the problem, but rather its orientation! It's mounted transversely in the Golf and longitudinally in the Audi 80. Since the AFN engine was available in the Golf, it's not a major issue, but it wasn't offered in the Audi 80, and that means certain essential accessories (like the exhaust manifold...) are missing.

For a longer installation, you should obtain an AFN engine from an Audi A4 or Passat 3B.
There, they were also standardly installed horizontally, and everything probably fits together better from the start.

Albrecht.

Hi Bertil.

That could be the case. I don't know. But apart from the exhaust manifold, the engine is actually no different. Maybe the Golf exhaust manifold will fit. Sure, here's the translation:

'Or, if you have one, the one from the A4 format.'
One should try it out sometime. icon_cool.gif
