Hello,

"I've been following the story of a Honda Civic owned by someone I know. It has a 2.0-liter turbodiesel engine with 110 horsepower (an exotic model not available in Germany)."
His problems with power loss, stuttering, etc., strongly remind me of issues common with TDI engines.
In extreme cases, the engine has even completely stalled, but it could be restarted shortly afterwards.

Looking under the hood, I saw the familiar VP 37, an injection nozzle with a cable (NHG), etc.
Powered by Bosch.

After several unsuccessful repair attempts, a Bosch workshop diagnosed a faulty MSW (Multi-System Wiring). Since a replacement pump was only slightly more expensive, the owner decided to have one installed immediately.

Since then, the car has been running at its full power again (for the first time), and it's no longer misfiring.

However, I'm a bit skeptical that there might be another error lurking somewhere.
Because we've seen before that replacing a pump can sometimes fix jerky behavior.

But a 20 km/h power loss, and especially the (rare, but still!) complete failure of the engine as symptoms of MSW problems, that would be something new to me...
Does anyone here have experience with something similar from other cases?
Gruß Ulf

Well, Ulf...

To put it in your own words: MORE INFO icon_wink.gif

biodiesel? sandpaper-diesel? mileage? ?? ??? ???? ????? icon_question.gif

Putting aside the electronics, it's just a VP37. We actually have two of them here in the workshop where the adjustment mechanism has completely corroded. It's impossible to determine exactly what caused it, but one vehicle came from a construction company, and the other from a farmer. Who knows what they put in the fuel...

I also read the other day (I don't remember where) that someone had a motor failure, along with an error message related to the quantity control system. It only happened once, and it seems something got stuck.

Hi Ralf,
Currently, the car has approximately 110,000 km on the odometer, and the issue with the shaking/jerking likely started around 60,000 km.
He apparently didn't get biodiesel, but he did get some Polish diesel a few times, which reportedly caused a lot of smoke when the engine was under heavy load.
What could be the reason why a specific amount of "diesel" (which presumably ignites normally, meaning the cetane number is okay) still doesn't burn completely?

Ah, that would be a parallel.

How can the MSW (mechanical steering wheel) jam despite motor vibrations, especially since it apparently behaved normally when starting up (if it was already jammed at zero, the engine wouldn't have been able to start)?
I can only imagine that there are some kind of debris icon_evil.gif icon_evil.gif in the pump, which could eventually get "stuck" in the MSW mechanism...

but a few times it was fueled with Polish diesel, after which it probably smoked quite a bit under heavy load.

Ah... bribe diesel.

What could be the reason why a specific injection volume of 'diesel' (which presumably ignites normally, meaning the cetane number is OK) still doesn't burn completely?

Okay, I'd rather test the cetane number in a test engine. Who's to say that the cetane number of the Polish diesel is okay? Even if it has a significant ignition delay, it will still ignite and the engine will run, but it will likely produce a lot of black smoke.
and especially TDI engines rely on a short ignition delay.

And then no one knows how the diesel fuel was adulterated. You'll never know if the gas station is adding used oil to it.

A jammed switch mechanism can have 1000 different causes. All the components are manufactured with very tight tolerances, so if something gets strained, it can easily get stuck.

Motor from ?
The joke was that, when you removed the brother-giver, the stuttering was completely gone icon_eek.gif.
