Hi.
Generally, I've noticed that TDIs are quieter than their related SDIs.
Is this a matter of policy (e.g., less damping material) or a matter of principle (perhaps the turbocharger's boost pressure also provides some

??).
What I've also noticed is that G4 TDIs (including the older 90 hp VP models) sound much smoother than my "post-war" 1Z.
Even my ex's 2000 1.7 SDI Polo (AKU) sounded quite smooth yesterday, despite the freezing temperatures.
A significant change is the engine mounting system. In the Polo and G4, the engine is "suspended," while in the G3, it sits on bearings. However, you wouldn't hear that from the outside.
VW must have made one or more changes that eliminated the "tank-like" sound of the 1Z engine. Even an AFN engine sounds softer.
I can imagine changes to the injection system (pilot injection with VP???), or modified combustion chambers.
Who knows more about this?
Thank you.
