Hello,
I can access the engine control units of Christel's ALH (2001) and my AFN using the standard login "12233".
However, I can see that this won't work with my new Polo, as it will require a "one-day login," which can be obtained from a VAG workshop upon request (as stated in the VAGCOM documentation).
What I'd like to know first:
How does the engine computer know that the code is actually valid for the current date – that is, what the current date is?
Do the newer STGs (Solid-State Drives) have something like a BIOS, similar to what we find in our PCs?
What happens if the STGe's internal clock becomes inaccurate, causing the internal date to be incorrect (e.g., due to a dead "BIOS" battery or a discharged/disconnected vehicle battery)?
Or does the story work completely differently... if so, how ? Gruß Ulf

Hi Ulf,
Another possibility would be for the MSG to request the date, for example, from the radio via CAN, since it can always find this information via RDS.
This naturally requires a compatible VAG radio.

Hi Jan,
I'm not entirely convinced about the RDS thing, because it would seem to imply that replacing the standard radio with another one would disable many functions of the control unit.
Unfortunately, I don't know the background, but I suspect that before querying VAG, I might need to read a specific code from the MSG (Modular Service Gateway) that VAG then uses to generate a login code valid for that day.

I think you've mixed up two different types of logins.
12233 is used for changes in adaptation channels. This still works, even on the newest EDC-16 engine control units (e.g., new A3, Touran, etc.), but it must be entered using function 16 (Security Access) instead of 11 (Login) on EDC-16 engine control units.
A '1-day login' is only required for replacing modules that are critical to the vehicle's operation (e.g., engine control unit, instrument cluster) or for key adaptation. Once you have it, you can use it with VAG-COM *indefinitely*. You just need to remember the date the login was generated and then always set the corresponding date on the appropriate screen in VAG-COM.

There are even conversion tools that can turn a 4-digit PIN (e.g., the immobilizer code of a car; a scratch-off number) into a 7-digit PIN, with a freely adjustable date. And it actually works...
I haven't found just one generator yet .
btw: The date could also originate from the combination unit, controlled by DCF.

Hi Ulf,
Recently, I had a nearly brand-new Passat with a 96kW engine in my possession. Out of curiosity, I used VAG-COM on it. Everything seemed to work fine, and it even accepted the standard login. However, it still had an EDC-15 engine control unit.
