Hi,
I am currently interested in a Fiat Doblo, and it offers a 1.3L JTD engine. This engine has a timing chain, which is interesting!
The engine is a CR diesel and was likely unveiled to the world around 2005, making it a completely new design.
Does anyone have a source of information about the technical details of this engine? I thought that timing belts were "in" and timing chains were "out."
Fiat writes about this engine:
1.3 Multijet 16V (with DPF)
Power: 62 kW (85 hp)
Maximum torque: 200 Nm at 1750 rpm.
Top speed: from 153 km/h to 156 km/h.
Acceleration from 0 to 100: from 0 seconds to 16.4 seconds.
Fuel consumption in urban areas: 6.7 l/100km*
Fuel consumption (extra-urban): 4.8 l/100km*
Fuel consumption combined: 5.5 l/100km*
CO2 emissions (combined): 145 g/km*

If you find information about the Opel Corsa 1.3 CDTI, you can also apply it to this model, as it has the same engine.

Ah yes, interesting.
"The engine is definitely from Fiat, right? Opel has never had a decent diesel engine development of its own; they prefer to buy them instead."
Then there's also this engine in the Fiat Punto and Suzuki Ignis, hmm.
However, it only produces 51 kW and 170 Nm of torque.
Is it now a GM or a Fiat?
It's likely a collaborative development.

Hello.
Within the former Opel FIAT GM Powertrain GmbH, from which this engine originated, FIAT was responsible for the diesel engines, Opel for the naturally aspirated engines, and SAAB for the turbocharged gasoline engines.
Therefore, this is a FIAT engine, but what kind? It demonstrated its potential in the Opel ECO Speedster, and with only a few modifications, it achieved 136 horsepower (100 kW).
By the way, it's not always just timing belts in Ford vehicles; currently, Ford also uses toothed wheels and chains in some diesel engines, which you'll find more and more often.
It might be better this way for FIAT, because the modified FIAT engines in the Alfas are notorious for being prone to timing belt failures.
Best regards, Jochen.

Hello everyone,
If it's the same diesel engine as in the Corsa, I can share my experiences with my rental car on Ibiza: It has a noticeable lack of power when starting, acceleration from low RPMs is very sluggish, and then suddenly, at some point, the power kicks in, but it's quite strong. This is quite unusual and reminds me a bit of my first Golf II GTD from 1984. A few years ago, I had a Vectra B 2.2 DTI as a rental car, and I also found that characteristic to be unpleasant. No, no, no, how much more harmonious the good old AFN engine is.

meyert

@meyert
This "first they don't want to, and then they force their way in" approach doesn't necessarily have to be attributed to Opel (although I personally don't really like Opel engines).
The 1Z engine does that too (okay, it's a Stone Age TDI with a wastegate), but... the ASZ 130 PS TDI (at least in my colleague's Golf 4) does that as well.
That's why another colleague also bought the 100 hp TDI engine for his Bora because he found the more powerful engine to be too extreme.
The mentioned Golf 4 now has 160 horsepower and still packs a punch.

Yes, but no VW diesel engine exhibits this to the same extent as French diesel engines. The worst is the 1.6 HDi with a wastegate (meanwhile, they have VTG turbochargers, which typically last 20,000 km ).
Only the 2.0HDi with 66kW engine feels somewhat more balanced – it lacks power throughout the entire rev range.
The mentioned Golf 4 now has 160 *** horsepower and still has plenty of power.
'Yes, but only because *** configured it that way. Take a look at the thread 'Strange engine mapping at VW' (you can find it where the beers are). You'll see how the torque limitation allows you to vary the engine's behavior (within physical limits). However, a tuner wants to provide that 'kick' because it makes the car feel like it has more power/torque to the uninformed customer.'
This is quite unusual and reminds me a bit of my first 1984 Golf II GTD.
This was also the case with the 92 SB model (one of the last ones). However, it can be mitigated in a few minutes by adjusting the control cone, which will result in more thrust at the bottom end. If there is enough air, but completely smoke-free operation is not possible with the TDs anyway, if you want to have some driving fun .

Are you surprised by that?
If I want to achieve 200 Nm of torque from a 1.3-liter engine, it will likely only be possible through a corresponding level of boost pressure. And if this boost pressure is, hypothetically, 1.3 bar (or perhaps even more), then it will take some time for it to build up.
An older TDI engine has 0.6 liters more displacement and approximately 0.5 bar less boost pressure, so it will definitely be a bit smoother. And besides, with diesel engines, displacement is something that can't be replaced by anything else...
I think the engine does a pretty good job considering its size.
Best regards, Jochen.

'So, the engine will probably also be in the Suzuki Wagon+ 1.3DTTI(?). I got to know it during a vacation in Mallorca, and I initially found the power delivery quite disturbing. But I got used to it pretty quickly. However, what I noticed negatively was that after driving downhill for a long time, it sometimes hesitated for a second or two before responding when I pressed the accelerator, accompanied by a loud, clattering noise. This didn't happen all the time, but when it did, it was very irritating. Could it be a software bug?'
I was really impressed with the fuel consumption: we drove about 1300 km, and I calculated 4.5 liters per 100 km. And that was with many hilly sections where I used the second gear quite a bit, but I rarely exceeded 100 km/h, and the air conditioning was on for about half the time! I'm sure it would be even more economical in a car with less aerodynamic drag.
