TDI Engine Failure: Common Causes & Fixes

I'm having a problem with my Golf Variant TDI, manufactured in 1996 and with 90 horsepower. This morning, I was stopped at a traffic light when the engine suddenly turned off. After about 1-2 minutes, I was able to start it again. This happened three times. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be causing this?
