Hello,
Yes, buy a
reasonable USB diagnostic adapter

.
The reason is as follows: When a diagnostic interface without its own intelligence (microprocessor) is used with VAG-COM, the Windows PC must control the entire timing of the diagnostic protocol.
Windows is not a real-time operating system, and there are no corresponding kernel drivers. Therefore, no programs that may temporarily halt the system (such as antivirus software) should be running while using VAG-COM.
When a COM port is emulated via USB, an additional, undefined timing behavior is introduced.
Emulated COM port, driver -> USB driver -> USB controller on the motherboard -> USB to COM interface converter -> serial level converter -> K-Line -> microcontroller in the gateway/control unit. This is not going to work properly.
The KKL+CAN (USB) diagnostic system looks like this:
USB Driver -> USB Controller on the Mainboard -> Microcontroller in the Diagnostic Adapter -> K-Line/CAN -> Microcontroller in the Gateway/ECU. Due to the built-in microprocessor, timing problems are almost eliminated.
Best regards, Rainer.
