Are Steuergeräte with different last characters compatible?

My car is experiencing significant performance loss due to a faulty engine control unit. This was determined by a VW workshop with a high degree of certainty.

Now I want to install a used control unit. The old one has part number:

3B1 907 401

Now I can't find a cheap, used one with exactly the same part number, i.e. in most cases, the letter "B" is added to the end. As far as I know, the last letter stands for the software version used? Well, I'm curious to know if the two following tax devices are compatible:

Old control unit: 3B1 907 401

New control unit: 3B1 907 401 B

Of course, I will also not withhold the data about your car:

VW Passat 3B, 2.5 V6, year 2000, 110 kw, automatic transmission, key number: 0603 474, engine code AKN and it is red-white painted and named "Mikey" icon_wink.gif

But if the last letter really should represent the software being used (I'm not entirely sure myself), then one should be able to re-program it...or update the software...or am I completely wrong?

NO, the software version is completely unclear. The questions can (hopefully) be answered by the person who updates your SW.

Exactly, if you do it differently, you'll get a shoe out of it. Index B is assigned to newer construction years. With/without ESP, it doesn't matter.
