Hi Diesel Mechanics,

I'm new to this forum and I'm hoping for your help!
I replaced the timing belt on my Polo Estate 1.9SDI, 64 horsepower (engine code: AEY).
Unfortunately, it hasn't started since then. Only white smoke comes out of the exhaust. I've re-adjusted everything twice (including the timing) to make absolutely sure it's not related to that. I've heard several times now that you need to configure the ESP to connect to a specific hub, but unfortunately, I'm completely unfamiliar with how to do that.
Please clarify for me icon_smile.gif; I hope I haven't bent the valves. The markings from VW for Top Dead Center (OT) are really bad!
If anyone lives in or near Berlin and has the time and knowledge, or knows a good workshop, I would be very grateful, and I would cover the corresponding labor costs icon_wink.gif.

Hi,
"It seems like the timing is off. Most likely, you didn't make any markings on the pulleys when you removed the old belt, and you didn't count the number of teeth between the camshaft and the ESP (electronic stability program) pulley. The only solution is to initially set the timing roughly using a timing light and then fine-tune it using VCDS." By the way, after replacing the timing belt, you should initially turn the engine by hand to ensure everything is aligned correctly, as this prevents valve damage if something isn't quite right.

Regards,
Jens.
