Volkswagen Golf 3 AFN, 110 horsepower, with a VEP (Vehicle Emission Protection) system - 213,000 km, the last 15,000 km with a switchable 10-cylinder box.

No issues despite demanding driving conditions, mostly highway driving.

Major repairs:
- 174000 water pump + cylinder head gasket.
- In vehicle 207000, worn synchronizer rings were diagnosed (difficult to shift from 2nd to 3rd and 4th). G. (shifting) - The problem disappeared on its own (perhaps the transmission can't handle the increased torque from the device??).

First set of nozzles, and icon_razz.gif cheers! Yay! icon_razz.gif The first LMM, the first one (despite the overly oiled textile air filter).

T3 1.6 JX TD, manufactured in 1985, with 140,000 km, received as a gift. Needs head gasket replacement, new valve cover gasket, and glow plugs.
146,000 km, intercooler installed, boost pressure and fuel injection increased, 19-row oil cooler.
184,000 KM, clutch is broken icon_confused.gif.
216,000 KM, engine overhauled (90A) icon_cool.gif
238,000 KM, head gasket replacement without machining icon_cool.gif.
295,000 KM, exhaust pipes planned icon_evil.gif (very loud for the Green Men), I can't hear anything icon_razz.gif.
328,000 KM, water pump, Putt icon_eek.gif. That's how long it lasts.
357,000 KM, charge air cooler hose burst - performance like 50 HP icon_redface.gif.
378,000 KM, clutch slipping icon_confused.gif.
399,000 km, ESP wiring harness, part number 3. Zyl putt (delicious sour dish) icon_twisted.gif
Today, 404,000 kilometers. Still running with the original cylinder head, turbocharger, engine block, alternator, and transmission!
Oil consumption: Since 280,000 km, approximately 1.5 liters. Today, depending on driving style, up to 3.5 liters. icon_eek.gif
"No oil changes have been performed for approximately 340,000 kilometers. Only the oil filter has been replaced occasionally when the oil pressure was too low (as indicated by the oil pressure gauge), and only conventional oil has been added to top it up."
"Since approximately 270,000 kilometers, there has been excessive blue smoke, especially during cold starts. The engine runs on only 3 cylinders for about 1-2 minutes before returning to normal operation. The glow plugs are in good condition. The timing belt, tensioner, camshaft seal, and oil pump seals have been replaced at intervals of approximately 80,000-110,000 kilometers." Thanks to the lack of electronics, it has never failed before.

Golf II, no tuning, 344,000 km. No modifications, no oil consumption, approximately 0.5 liters per 15,000 km. icon_biggrin.gif
My girlfriend has owned it since it had 168,000 kilometers on the odometer.

Hello, I drive a Passat B4 from 1997 with an 81 kW engine and an add-on module that boosts it to approximately 95 kW.
Without the turbo, approximately 100,000 km; with the turbo, 216,000 km. For an engine with over 316,000 km, it's been running without major problems. I replaced the turbo about a month ago because it wasn't providing enough boost. Otherwise, there's nothing unusual besides normal wear and tear.

As some of you who follow AN AEL know, my 1996 A6 TDI Quattro has now reached 650,000 km. Of those, 450,000 km were driven with a trailer and a chip installed. It has been in two accidents, one of which was quite severe and damaged the crankshaft, causing the bearings to fail at 300,000 km. It was never properly professionally repaired. When I got the car, the engine was incredibly loud (I suspected the crankshaft was about to fail). I have a motor from a VW bus, but I don't have the time to install it. I checked the oil pan, and found the last bearing still inside, with the screws stripped. I replaced the screws, and the engine is running again. I hope to get it through the winter, and then I'll install another engine with a VTG turbocharger and engine management system from a 150 HP Caravelle TDI. THAT is a motor.

97 AHU, total mileage approximately 318,000 km with no major issues. 1 clutch, 1 turbocharger, and 1 mass airflow sensor icon_smile.gif.
Owned since 10/99, approximately 200,000 miles driven.
'Refurbished/repaired: 1 timing chain tensioner replaced, 1 crankshaft sprocket for the timing belt planned for replacement due to 2-3 teeth of play. 1 relay (part number 109) resoldered due to a solder joint failure (a small tip: it was only visible with a 6x magnifying glass, and I've been driving about 50,000 miles since then without any further issues).'
And the saddest thing, last week in the botany department icon_cry.gif, parked, among other things. Axle failure, total loss, and now searching for a replacement!!!

1. Golf IV AHF, 281,000 km, purchased with 50,000 km, no problems other than relay 109.
"Everything is original, except the AGR and catalytic converter, which are 'defective'. It has a 'princetta' tuning box installed for the last 150,000 km. It has a larger intake manifold from the 130PS version. The 5th gear has been extended for the last 100,000 km. The boost pressure has been increased to 1.2 bar for the last 30,000 km. It has 0.216 injectors installed for the last 5,000 km."
2. Passat Variant, 2002 model, AWX 130hp engine, purchased with 49,000 km, now at 75,000 km, with the option to activate a 150 Ohm tuning for 20,000 km. No problem.

AKU, 130,500 km, no engine problems so far, except for temporary sticking of the SBV pistons.
Worn parts so far: 2 drive belts, 2 tensioners, 2 ribbed belts, 2 air filters, 4 [unspecified items]. Fuel filters.
Oil consumption could not be determined.
However, the ESP leaks without RME. Using seals that are not resistant to RME is akin to sabotage in the age of Mars rovers and is a testament to poor quality. My frustration, unlike in other cases, is NOT directed at RME, but at Bosch. One may criticize RME for many things, but NOT for the fact that it attacks certain sealing materials in vehicles approved for use without RME! That's not a technical problem, but rather a matter of company policy!

I'll probably start putting a regular pack of paper towels under the ESP. I collect the soaked packs in a trash bag. They make excellent fire starters for my dad's fireplace. This way, I save myself the trouble of disassembling the ESP, and others can still benefit from it. I'm going to go to great lengths and invest money and/or time early on, to fix what Bosch has arbitrarily built into the ESP.

Mileage: 230,000 km

Traded so far (this is not an exhaustive list...):

227,000 km: Water pump (hasn't even reached 90,000 km, water pump from 'Teile-Fuzzi'!) completely seized. Car towed icon_evil.gif
209,000 km: After much hesitation, I replaced the ESP (Electronic Stability Program) unit (Bosch, €800). The car is running like new again, without any black smoke! LD is now performing well again.
195,000 km: The soot sensor is getting stronger -> ATL (650 €, new VAG part) replaced without success, LD (load dump) still slightly too high, rarely: limp mode.
178,000 km: Bubbling in the heating system -> New head gasket, cylinder head machined, new valve stem seals, and timing belt replaced.
165,000 km: 4 new injectors installed by Rainer (BOSCH refused the job!).
152,000 km: New battery (1. The battery was starting to weaken after over 9 years.
150,000 km: Catalytic converter defective (monolith loose).
145,000 km: Water pump (actually not necessary) replaced.
143,000 km: Replaced the O-ring on the coolant temperature sensor (minor, but constant leakage).
134,000 km: Coolant reservoir and coolant replaced (completely rusty fluid).
132,000 km: Crankcase ventilation hose replaced (engine compartment with oil stains).
93,000 km: Timing belt plus tensioner and new crankshaft center bolt icon_wink.gif, new ribbed belt (was completely torn) and tensioner for this (jammed and expensive icon_evil.gif).

Otherwise, just normal maintenance, important: air conditioning every 2 years icon_eek.gif.

Miscellaneous: Everything is working great. Fuel consumption: between 5.8 and 6.5 liters per 100 km. Oil consumption: approximately 0.1 liters per 1000 km.

Very unfortunate: Only 1.5 years left with the yellow sticker - the countdown is on. icon_evil.gif icon_evil.gif icon_evil.gif

Post27-11-2005, 8:12    Subject: Mileage A6 Quote

I drive an Audi A6, type C4, with engine code AEL, originally 140 horsepower, and a chip tuning upgrade that boosts it to 160 horsepower.
Bought at 53,000 km, now at 250,000 km. Original clutch. Fuel consumption between 6.5 and 8.5 liters (when towing a trailer). New injector nozzles (for safety, I don't want to replace the pistons due to leaking nozzles). Head gasket replaced at 210,000 km. Slight wear on the upper part of the cylinder bore. Oil consumption is still 1.0 liter per 15,000 km (so, pretty good?). New oil pan gasket. Oil pump gasket also replaced.
The only thing that always worries me is this damn timing belt. The belt on the ESP model failed at 70,000 km, and after that, all the belts were replaced, including the tensioner. At 110,000 km, there were rattling noises coming from the engine (thankfully, my wife had complained about it several times). The water pump was junk, so everything was replaced again, including the tensioner. I think this car is really good, and I hope it lasts for at least 500,000 km.

Ditto icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif icon_biggrin.gif

Golf 3 AHU, 66 kW, with 216 injectors installed after 5,000 km.

'Runs like a Swiss watch, only one repair: I was almost at my wit's end due to extreme fluctuations in boost pressure. I installed a new solenoid valve (N75?), and now it's running perfectly again.'

Consumption approximately 6 liters, oil approximately 1.5 liters for 15,000 km.

Best regards,

1. Golf IV: PD AJM 85 kW, first registration 09/99:

-> sold after 89,000 kilometers. In addition to standard service and timing belt replacement.
At 60,000 miles, no maintenance was performed; there were no problems, and it always ran quietly with minimal vibration.
Looking back, I think the maintenance intervals were probably reached around 70,000 km (problematic).
"I wasn't aware of that at the time, as it happens gradually."

2. Golf IV: PD ASZ 96 kW, first registration 09/02:

-> Currently 80,000 kilometers. Water pump leaking at 65,000 km, therefore premature [replacement/failure].
Timing belt replacement. Idle vibrations, rough running (like a rattling box).
Comparison to AJM (!), but otherwise no technical details. Problems so far.
Rear brake pad on the left side worn down at 78,000 km due to the brake being stuck (a consequence of...).
"Long-life service, meaning the car hardly ever needs to go to the workshop..."
