I sold my Golf 3 TDI (engine code: ALE) with 310,000 km in December 2006 to someone who was moving east.

The only drawback is that it needed 5 glow plugs in 3 years, otherwise everything is original except for the diesel filter.

Best regards, Andy.

Stand in line earlier, now it's 345,000 km icon_wink.gif.

The engine is running fine, but the car is rusty in some places.

Volkswagen Golf III 1.9 TDI, engine code 1Z, manufactured in December 1994.
Engine tuning without EGR system, starting from 120,000 km.

Regards,
I'm sorry, I don't understand. Can you please rephrase your request?

On January 22nd, my previous company car was decommissioned. Mileage: 371,000 km (unmodified). It was a T4 Transporter ("estate" = 5-seater with dog box installation) model year 9/1997 with an ACV engine.

The engine ran perfectly until the end, if you overlook the slight ticking sound when the engine was cold. The body had significant rust problems on the rocker panels, along the top edge of the windshield, and at the seams of the body panels. In addition, almost everything on the front axle was worn out. Fuel consumption at the end was approximately 12 liters.

Its successor: The T5 Transporter, with the same equipment and the ATD engine. There's a huge difference in driving comfort and braking performance between the T4 and T5, but the "new" one struggles significantly with the 1.9 TDI engine. For that, it achieves a fuel consumption of under 8 liters, which, combined with the large fuel tank, provides a very respectable range.

Passat TDI 35i [Variant, Pacific, 110 hp] * 05/96 - 11/06 * AFN + CYP * 351,508 km

I retired my 35i (3A) TDI with 351,508 km in November. Engine, un-tuned.
Almost 90% long-distance driving, always starting slowly and gradually warming up the engine. Consumption: 1,300 km with one [tank/charge].
The fuel tank (70L capacity) was almost always full, and often it was filled to 1,400 (presumably referring to a specific amount or reading). Last scheduled VAG departures.
The vehicle underwent a workshop inspection at a mileage of 96,000 km. Engine/Transmission/Clutch/Turbo - all included.
Sure, here's the translation:

'original until the very end.'

Total failures:

November 2001:
I was out late in Berlin the other night, and that's when the infamous Relais 109 struck with merciless efficiency. No replacement.
while already knowing that all the workshops were about to close (since the symptoms were already known). One time, the TDI broke down in the middle of a...
a huge intersection - and of course, I had to patiently wait out the 109-minute delay - that's how I...
Never cursed or sweated. After various wild parties on the way back (since then, I've loved...
The emergency lane on the highway was finally reached at 4:15 AM, about 12 kilometers before my home.
End of the line - I had to be towed by an acquaintance. Another issue: the battery is completely dead.

September 2005:
Back home after an extensive tour of Scandinavia. On the first day of work.
Early in the morning: The car won't start. The starter motor spins up like a turbine, but the engine doesn't catch. I have.
I'm glad the TDI held up well despite the issue and is now back home.
The car is in the garage and can be repaired icon_smile.gif.

Repairs (excluding routine maintenance such as oil changes, oil and air filters, etc.):

- Both front wheel bearings were replaced (two each, one for the right and one for the left).
- Replaced one front shock absorber.
- 1 x LMM - Cleaning using oven cleaner/brake cleaner - successful.
- Replaced the alternator once (the pulley had detached from the alternator shaft, was tilted to the side, and...).
'flexed' on the mounting bracket. The noise was worse than a dentist's drill.
- Wheel speed sensor (ABS) replaced a total of 3 times (2 times on the left, 1 time on the right). It doesn't seem to be a very high-quality product.

- Muffler (both high and mid) replaced. It was already corroded at 220,000 km. It was so poorly designed that nothing could be fixed.
(Inlet pipe entering the muffler).
- Replaced the front right window regulator; the motor is broken (238,000 km).
- Replace pressure relief valve for air conditioning.
- Replaced the tie rod (front left) due to play, and replaced the rear axle bushings (they were in terrible condition... icon_wink.gif at 270,000 km.
The brake fluid was changed at the same time, as bleeding was already necessary for the rear axle.
- Starter motor repaired at 308,000 km (see above).
- Replaced front wiper arms at 338,000 km (they broke off near the shaft due to torrential rain on the highway).
'I'm not sure I want to experience another 'blind flight' like that, where we just kept flying until the car was finally in place.'
- Replaced the tail feathers: the rear right feather was broken. It made a funny squeaking sound when the two broken pieces came together.
If the icon_sad.gif shock absorbers are stacked on top of each other, they are essentially new.

- Climate control: A hairline crack in the condenser, and the coupling started to weaken (1. The car's performance wasn't as smooth as usual, with 349,000 kilometers on the odometer.
'At that point, I didn't feel like dealing with it anymore, so I bought a car *with a glove compartment*.' I've been expecting something like this for a while.
longer desired icon_wink.gif

Conclusion: Overall, for me, it's an extremely reliable car, considering its mileage and longevity.

What was the most annoying thing about the car?

- Excessive tire wear on the rear axle, despite carefully adjusted alignment, with the tire tread pattern deteriorating rapidly after a short time.
- Front doors: In cold weather, they opened perfectly fine, but wouldn't close again. Everything has been set up, cleaned, and treated.
It was a real disaster during the winter. You could still buckle the doors with a seatbelt, but how do you lock them afterwards?
Arriving in front of the shopping temple? There were often quite a few complaints from my significant other about that icon_wink.gif.

- The cargo cover seems to have been designed by someone who wanted to punish Passat drivers. Always rattling, unwieldy.
stubborn - somehow always in the way and inflexible.
- Although the windshield has never been replaced, there are extreme rust bubbles along the transition to the roof, spanning the entire width, starting approximately at 270,000 kilometers.
- Windshield looks as fresh as if sandblasted after 350,000 km icon_wink.gif
- The driver's seat was essentially worn out after approximately 230,000 kilometers.

Best regards,

Currently, I have the privilege of driving a T4 Transporter van for a move.

It's a 2.4-liter 5-cylinder naturally aspirated engine with 271,000 km on the odometer and around 75 horsepower. Finally, I know what "poor acceleration" means... it runs like a bag of nuts, and I'm constantly praying that it doesn't explode. It's actually kind of fun, but tomorrow I have another 300 km of highway driving ahead of me.

I certainly can't imagine my ASZ lasting that long.

Another company vehicle has been decommissioned and sent for recycling.

T4 Transporter (estate/station wagon), manufactured in late 1996, engine code: ACV, mileage: 477,000 km (unmodified).

Problems: Engine knocking at high temperatures and partial-load engine misfires when cold. Front ball joints are worn and causing rattling noises on uneven road surfaces - although they have been replaced several times. Diesel consumption is 8.5 - 10 liters under mostly city driving conditions. Oil consumption is approximately 0.5 liters per 1000 km, which is highly dependent on driving style. There are rust spots on the edges of the side panels (only on the left side), around the handle trim of the tailgate, and on the front lower and upper window frames. Rust on the side sill, below the front right door opening.

The HU (Homologation/Type Approval) has expired and would not be passed in its current state. The repair is deemed uneconomical and will be rejected. "Verwertung" translates to "liquidation" or "disposal," which in this context means "liquidation involves an auction."

... then I would also like to share my experiences here:

My car has now clocked over 574,000 kilometers and is still running like new.
Freshness:
All engine parts are still original; nothing has been replaced so far.
ZKD (head gasket), turbo, fuel injectors, fuel pump, thermostat, water pump, hydraulic lifters.
"...including a Lima (which once received new injectors), power steering servo, and air conditioning compressor."

Current oil consumption is 0.3 liters per 1000 km; it might be worth checking the valve stem seals.
replace, are also still the first... icon_wink.gif

Oil change should generally be performed once a year (after 20,000 to 40,000 km) using 10W40 oil.
Castrol - so, not a special oil.

Starting performance is excellent even in winter, and the original glow plugs are working perfectly.
to serve. Acceleration, top speed, with minimal loss of performance.
compared to my Avant, which has a slightly different turbocharger from the factory.
"is more agile."

Even with the chassis, much is still original: transmission, clutch (!), drive shafts.
complete braking system (hoses have been soaked multiple times - obviously), wheel bearings,
Exhaust system...

Of course, there are also some issues: Since kilometer 23000, there has been some oil in the coolant.
At that time, I still had the car at the workshop for maintenance, and they wanted to...
replace the ZKD (timing belt), I didn't want to invest any more money and I just wanted to keep driving it until it broke down.
more is possible... and I'm driving it today... icon_lol.gif (probably the oil cooler).
slightly leaky and not the ZKD (presumably referring to a specific part).

Window lifters, door opening mechanism, seats (I had to weld these, as they were broken).
Of course, things like the tailgate mechanism are common candidates for repairs.

Regarding the engine, there is no preventative maintenance required other than the timing belt replacement. I.
"I'm surprised that the intake manifold is still open..."

The distance traveled is divided into 2/3 by train and 1/3 by city transport, with very little travel in rural areas.
This includes tens of thousands of kilometers driven with a trailer, primarily for vacation trips.

I avoid revving above 4000 RPM, yet icon_wink.gif on the track, one doesn't creep along.

Of course, the end of the car is somewhat foreseeable: all the timing belt pulleys are...
It's showing some wear, and eventually, the timing belt might break.

I'm now unsure whether it's worth it, even if it's just for the enjoyment of it.
"to tinker with the engine and perform maintenance work?" I see the danger.
that it might be necessary to verschandeln out the intake manifold and re-grind the valves.
new nozzles, etc., which disrupt the current balance and affect other things.
Components are failing...

What do you experienced mechanics think about this?

Team100.

I personally see things similarly. He has now completed his service.

Besides the ZR (spark plug) and oil change, possibly also some defective parts. Spark plugs, I would let him run until the end with dignity icon_biggrin.gif.
Everything else likely exceeds the value of the engine, and consequential damage cannot be ruled out. It might be worth checking the connecting rod bearings. But does it really make sense...?
