Hello everyone, the engine in my V70 (5-cylinder) is much louder than the identical engine in my colleague's Audi A6. Since they are identical engines, the knocking sound could be caused by a fault. Does anyone have an idea how to get rid of the knocking, or where the cause might lie? Best regards icon_question.gif

Hi,

I would like to check (or have checked) the ESP timing.

Hi,

What Bertil says is certainly worth considering.
From my own experience, I know that this doesn't necessarily have to manifest itself in terms of noise.

But:
Has the Volvo become 'louder' recently?
If that's not the case, it could be due to different insulation, even though the engine is the same model ('AEL').
They are, after all, two completely different vehicles.
For example, the Audi C4 has a full enclosure.
Just as an idea icon_idea.gif

P.S.: By the way, does the Volvo actually have a transverse engine?

Hi there,
The AEL (Active Emission Control) system is significantly louder in the Volvo compared to the Audi, primarily due to its transverse installation, reduced space, and less insulation.
"Tapping" doesn't necessarily always have to be a matter of engine adjustment. In the case of a 5-cylinder engine, the plunger for the vacuum pump often rattles, which can sound like tapping or rattling lifters to the untrained ear.
You can then replace the lifter rod. Usually, if the camshaft hasn't been damaged yet, the noise will go away for a while, but it will eventually return.
A new vacuum pump can only help to a limited extent.
Hydros are also a possibility, but those can be tested relatively easily.
What is the machine's mileage?

Regards,

Olli.

Nozzles could also be an option.
