Hi,

damn the search function. icon_biggrin.gif
My goal was to find out what type of flywheel was used in/with the AFN engine. However, after reading a lot of threads on the subject, I have some additional questions besides the initial one.

First of all, does the AFN now have a dual-mass flywheel or not?
Where's the most unlikely place to find this out? (The VW dealer who tried to sell me fuel injectors with threads is definitely not a reliable source of information.) There are people in the archive who say he has one (e.g., Ulf).
and which ones strongly object to it (e.g., Arne).
Has anyone reached a final conclusion yet?

Furthermore, I've occasionally read that forum members here have lightened their flywheels, or at least want to. I now understand that this causes the engine to rev up faster, which presumably improves acceleration times. However, it's also said to increase vibrations. Now my question: TDI engines are already prone to vibrations. What could happen if you lighten the flywheel as much as possible and, at the same time, increase the engine's power output to its maximum potential? (Everyone can define "maximum potential" for themselves.)
Or does something like that only make sense if you also use a stronger crankshaft?

Thank you in advance for your answers.
It would be important to me if someone could clearly tell me whether or not it has a dual-mass flywheel. The other information is just of passing interest to me.

Best regards and thank you.
Thomas.

Hi,
Okay, the part number for your Schwung is 028 105 264 E.
The whole thing is called a 'flywheel with a clutch,' which is probably something used in VW vehicles.
It's supposed to be a dual-mass flywheel. At least, that's what the price suggests.

Diameter: 228mm.
AHU and 1Z engines are equipped with a 220mm clutch.

greetings

To the best of my knowledge, the dual-mass flywheel was also developed as part of the AFN project, primarily for use in the AFN.

So, there's a 99% chance that your car has a ZMS.

Hi,

Okay, first of all, thank you for your answers. So, let's assume that the AFN has a ZM flywheel. icon_smile.gif

Does the flywheel also have anything to do with torque?
What is the exact difference between a dual-mass flywheel and a simple flywheel? Or, to put it another way, what advantage does such a flywheel offer?

Regards,
Thomas.

An engine never runs perfectly smoothly. Vibrations always occur in the crankshaft. To prevent these vibrations from being transmitted to the transmission and affecting the driving characteristics and driving experience, the dual-mass flywheel (DMF) is used to reduce or eliminate these vibrations.

Hi,

ok, danke. Okay, I understand.

Where do these "speed fluctuations" come from?
When I look at my tachometer, there's absolutely no fluctuation.
The idle is perfectly stable, and even when I turn on high-power devices, the RPM doesn't change at all.
What is meant by "speed fluctuation"?

Greetings.
Thomas.

What is meant by 'speed fluctuation'?

Hi.

'Speed fluctuation' might be misleading. You could also call them 'rotational vibrations.' Hopefully, that clarifies things. The reason these fluctuations occur is that the motor doesn't operate constantly but in cycles. These fluctuations happen within each revolution and are too small and rapid to be detected by a standard tachometer.
Best regards,
Ernst.

Hello,

Okay, it's clear now. Thank you for the explanation(s). Also to you, Dirk. icon_biggrin.gif

I think a dual-mass flywheel is definitely not cheap.
Since comfort isn't terribly important to me, I could also tolerate a bit more vibration. Could it be that the transmission or the drivetrain icon_question.gif If I were to buy a very basic model with the same dimensions, it would probably be a bit cheaper.

Greetings.
Thomas.

Vibrations are definitely not good for the transmission. Otherwise, manufacturers wouldn't install balancer shafts and dual-mass flywheels. High-frequency vibrations still pose problems for today's components, which are increasingly designed to be as lightweight as possible, despite the use of better materials.

Hi,

So, would you recommend the more expensive dual-mass flywheel again?

Hmmm, well, let's see. If, as a result, another part, such as the transmission, breaks, then saving money on the flywheel might not have been worth it. icon_rolleyes.gif
ok, thanks anyway. icon_smile.gif

Hello,

The main reason for using a dual-mass flywheel is likely to reduce vibration stress on the transmission and the rest of the drivetrain. Increased comfort is a nice side effect. Transmissions in AFN vehicles are often already operating near their design limits. I wouldn't cut corners on this.

Best regards,
Christian.

Hi,
I think that making the flywheel lighter wouldn't cause significant damage to the engine :?. Because the 'vibrations,' or rather, the vibrational forces, are already present; they are just dampened by the ('weights') on the crankshaft flywheel. The forces are present up to the flywheel. It wouldn't make much difference to the engine, and I don't think it would affect the transmission either.
Thinking back to the old VW diesel engines, which used to shake and rattle so much, they still managed to run for hundreds of thousands of kilometers.
